It’s such a generic answer but I would travel around Europe. I’d learn some new languages, see lots of famous monuments and museums, and see how a whole lot of other people live.

And congrats on graduation!

I just wrote out a long answer about why you should go to New Zealand, but my computer went wacko, so just take my word for it. I love Europe, but if you are ready for just plain fun, go to New Zealand while you’re young.

Go to Australia. I had the privilege of being there for 3 weeks years ago.
Sydney is absolutely incredible.

Santorini! because it’s out of this world fabulous but you have to wait until summer, or the Bahamas-same reason- but it’s very expensive. So, Mazatlan!!! Stay in the Golden Zone area-good water, great beach, great food.

South Africa…I don’t really have an explaination I just feel like I need to go there!

sjmc1989's avatar

^Sorry I was being selfish this is about you not me!^ I’ve always though it is a beautiful place and it would be a unique trip to take. and you deserve it for Graduating Congratulations! :)

You have extra money after graduating???? Come bring me some and count that as a trip…

I would spend a while on the beach if I was you, I went to Costa Rica last summer and it was beautifulllllllll. The beaches go for miles on the south west corner, they’re amazing and you lose track of time. I would stay there forever.

If you end up going to New Zealand, then I would try to go on a Zorb ride. It looks amazingly fun.

LKidKyle1985's avatar

Hmm I guess another good question to ask is, what will i do there if i vacation alone? never vacationed alone before. what do you guys do?

Judi's avatar

@LKidKyle1985 ; I have just been told that it is amazing if you like adventure. You can ski, you can scuba dive and the water is perfect and the people are incredibly nice.
My neighbors went as a side trip when they went to Australia and almost moved there.
Others have told me that they made such good friends there that they canceled all their hotels because people treated them like family everywhere they went and invited them to stay with them.
Europe is a great historical experience that everyone should do, probably more than once. But if you just want pure fun, go to New Zealand.

My standard answer is: Rome. It’s such and amazing city so whenever anyone asks this kind of question I always answer Rome.

The bank.

Violet's avatar

I agree with Joe. SAVE IT!

LKidKyle1985's avatar

Hmm yes the bank crossed my mind too. but how often will I be free to travel like this again?

J0E's avatar

if this money is truly expendable you will be able to take it some other time, but don’t spend it all right away.

Violet's avatar

@LKidKyle1985 – after this vacation, never?

MrBr00ks's avatar

the phrases “just graduated from college” and “have some extra money” usually don’t go together (they wont with me). Nice job! =p

LKidKyle1985's avatar

@MrBr00ks Thanks, it was a bit of luck though I guess. (the money not the graduating :P)

Violet's avatar

@MrBr00ks I was thinking the same thing!

Ask yourself: “What kind of experiences do I want to have while I travel?”

If you are looking for recreation mainly, then finding a resort destination that promises the kind of activities you want to experience should be no big challenge. Consult a travel agent to get good advice and to get the most out of your money.

If you want to learn more about yourself, then consider traveling to places when you can live and even work with others on something you consider interesting and challenging.

You might want to consider something like the Peace Corps. There may be a cause you would like to work towards or a particular culture in which you would like to immerse yourself.

Wherever you go, the most enriching experiences of travel come from contact with the people who live and work in that place. Resorts provide a very safe and comfortable but extremely sheltered and restricted perspective of the place in which they are situated.

If you are planning on going off the beaten track, you better be well prepared and equipped. Learn to speak the language and read up on the cultural norms laws and practices. Be sure your consulate or embassy knows where you are going and when you expect to return. Keep them informed if your plans change. That way, if you should seem to go missing, someone will know to look (out) for you. Real experience of real life is not without some risks.

Even within your own country there are opportunities to discover amazing things about yourself and life in general. Think outside the box! There will never be a better time than before you settle down in your career and relationships that may be a major part of your future.

I wish you the best as you take the opportunity to enjoy your travel and to explore places and yourself!

You have to give some hints, what do you like, what is your idea of a great adventure. I live in Australia and if you have the time this is a fantastic place and the exchange rate from USA dollars isn’t great at this stage but not bad.

There are backpacker tours everywhere so your money goes further and tons of young people going on them, you would not be lonely.

Google Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, Airley Beach, Kakadu, Uluru, Freemantle,
Broom, Fraser Island, the list is endless. If you like the big cities, then Sydney and Melbourne are cool.

Australia is just a huge island so if you are into beaches, this is it.

If you are into outdoor activities, beautiful scenery and really great people, then I second Judi’s suggestion about New Zealand. There are lots of young people travelling around and great, fun things to do and see – underground river rafting, bungee jumping (if you like that), Zorbing, etc. The people are great and very helpful.

If you are more in to seeing arty things and “cultah,” you probably want to consider Europe. You can’t beat France and Italy if you’ve never been; a Eurail pass or the cheap airlines are great ways to get around.

A third option would be Greece where you could have a combination of ancient sites and culture and island-hopping via ferries for great beaches and hanging out time.

Whichever you choose, I would seriously look into staying in youth hostels or similar student hotels. It is quite easy to hook-up (in the old-fashioned sense and probably the newer) with people while you are travelling if you stay in these places and meeting people to spend time with while on the road makes all the difference.

Save your money and start paying off your student loans.

@LKidKyle1985 If you want a scenic view of Europe I would go to Italy and Croatia. They are amazing and beautiful places. They both have gorgeous port towns and the food is fantastic in Italy. I definitely recommend them both.

Tahiti. I love the beach, and this seems more exotic than Hawaii or the Caribbean.

Judi's avatar

@Dr_Dredd ; It is more exotic, but not a lot of adventure. Very laid back. If you want to relax I would definitely say Tahiti. Once was nice, but enough for me.

rooeytoo's avatar

Most of the South Pacific islands are similar, laid back, some pretty beaches, ho hum!
The Caribbean is (I think) prettier and more fun.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

Laid back and relaxing sounds awfully good to me!

rooeytoo's avatar

@Dr_Dredd – yeah I like it for a couple of days, then I can’t just lie around any longer, gotta have some action!

I am spoiled though, I live on one of the biggest islands in the South Pacific and there are spectacular uninhabited beaches all along the 16000 mile coastline.
