Have you ever been a fan of Comic Books, either now or when you were younger ?

Asked by Pretty_Lilly (4660points) December 21st, 2009

I came across this character The Blue Beetle I wonder why would anyone bother creating such a silly character in the first place, the whole concept just made me laugh:
A rookie police officer, he used special equipment, a bulletproof costume and a superstrength-inducing “2-X vitamin”, and the assistance of a neighborhood pharmacist to fight crime.
Have you ever come across a Super-Silly Comic book character, if so what is it ?

Disregard that
I think most “super heroes” are silly

Well back in 1939, fictional characters and entertainment in general were much more campy than they are now a days. Think of Batman from the 1966 TV series and Batman from The Dark Knight (2008) film. The Batman as we know him now is very serious and grim, back then it was very goofy and not so serious.

If DC were to create a superhero like that today, it would probably be for the laughs, not to be serious.

Well, sort of. I’ve always been a Mad Magazine nut (if you can classify that as a “comic book”).

I like comics like Foxtrot and Calvin and Hobbes. I don’t really read the ones with superheros and supervillians.

I adore comic strips like Calvin and Hobbes, etc.

I am totally lost. Are we supposed to talk about what is our favourite comics? Or which comic books we think are silly?

I never did care for them.

I was hooked on the X-Men for awhile. Then it got too complicated to follow.

Yes, I was a fan of comic books when I was younger. I would probably enjoy them now, but I have neither the time nor the money to invest in them. Was that the question, or was the question what silly characters we have seen? They’re all a bit silly, that’s kind of the point, to take us out of reality for a bit. Specifically? There was an Xmen bad guy once who was the toymaster or something like that. A rich, spoiled, overgrown child obsessed with toys who created a “fun house” full of robotic toys designed to kill the Xmen. He was awfully silly.

I just have Batman and Sonic the Hedgehog. I also have an assortment of Iron Man comics that I don’t even know where they came from.

@ “EVERYONE” I’m sorry but I had to craft this compound complex question as I am sick and tired of having my questions pulled by moderators as being too simple, open ended or just basically taking a poll and in need of editing to their standards !!

Trying to answer all of them here:

1. Yes, I was a fan of comic books when I was younger, took a break for a few years and I’m now a fan again in full force (reading around 100 comics a month, give or take a few).
2. All comic book superheroes are “silly” in some sense. A guy who got bitten by a spider and can now stick to walls? A man who can fly and is super-strong because he came from another planet? A guy who gets big and green when angry because he was near a bomb blast? A man who can run really fast after getting struck by lightning? They’re all silly. The Blue Beetle is no sillier than the others.
3. As for who I think is silly, Squirrel Girl ranks pretty high on that list. And Impossible Man. Paste Pot Pete. Rocket Racer. Toyman. Dazzler. Arcade.

I’ve always been a comic book fan, and once upon a time wanted to be a cartoonist. My fave’ books were The Adventures of Asterix, The Beano and The Dandy (UK).

I enjoy the more cute comic strips like Garfield or Calvin and Hobbes than the traditional super hero ones. My best friend however is still obsessed with anything superhero comic strip band she is 24 years old!

I absolutely loved comics, and still buy them every once in a while, especially the graphic novels that tell the back story of Stephen King’s “Dark Tower.” Take a look at this:

Now, you can get a degree in comics, heh. This almost seems ideal for me, if they allowed me to go there from an mfa, because I am having a hard time finding a “plain” masters program in creative writing.

Yeah. I have the series of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by Marvel. I also have a few graphic novels that I just picked up a week ago. They’re more about magic and stuff though.

I also read The Magicians Nephew in graphic novel form. I really liked it.

The only Blue Beetle I ever heard of was played by Jim Boyd on the 70s US kids’ educational show The Electric Company.

I like graphic novels like The Sandman, but I haven’t read anything like X-Men or classic DC/Marvel type stuff since I was 17.
