Does starting birth control on "day 1" help with the pain of that week's menstrual cycle?

Asked by Facade (22937points) December 23rd, 2009

I’ve read that birth control pills help with painful cycles.
I’m supposed to start taking the pill either today (day 1 start) or Sunday (Sunday start). I’m in pretty severe pain from cramps stomach and back pain and pressure, nausea, dizziness.
Would starting the pill today instead of Sunday ease my cramps during this period, or would it be too soon?

It doesn’t matter when I start mine, the pain is the same.

No. Takes a month to work.

It probably won’t help with the cramps, but I would still start immediately, because protection from pregnancy starts immediately if you use same day start instead of having to use backup contraception for the first 2 weeks.

@MagsRags Thanks :) I ended up taking it today.

For future reference, I always do Sunday Start. It makes it really easy to keep track of your pills, your cycles, your ovulation, and your prescriptions in the long run.

@La_chica_gomela I read that doing that makes your periods be on the weekends. I need mine to be during the week because of my school schedule.
