What's the difference between a urine test and a blood test?

Asked by Zone36 (416points) December 23rd, 2009

I want to know the differences in how they are administered. Not the obvious stuff.

Their effectiveness in finding, drugs, steroids and hormones.

And why a blood test is considered more effective.

Blood is constantly in the body. Urine leaves.

well, my guess is that urine mostly contains wasted fluids, for instance stuff that was formerly in the body, and a blood test is more for finding constants.

The short answer is that a urine test is administered by having you pee in a cup. A blood test, they actually draw your blood.

Blood test finds anything in your bloodstream, the urine test only finds things that (1) are passed in urine, and (2) left your body in the last day or so.

Typically, if it’s a drug urine test, they’ll verify that you didn’t use the facilities (e.g., all the pee went in the cup) and that the pee was body temperature.

Testing for illicit drug use is always a urine test as far as I know. I’m still in the office finishing up and pulled out the lab manual to confirm, and all the “Drugs of abuse” tests listed that could be ordered were urine. They test for metabolites substances that drugs are turned into as the body processes them

Blood tests are sometimes to measure levels of therapeutic drugs – for example, if an epileptic has been having seizures, one of the first things his care provider will do is check blood levels of his anti-seizure medication to see if he’s been taking the med and to help decide if they need to increase the dose. Some hormones can also be measured with blood tests – in my practice, I sometimes need to check levels of progesterone, estradiol, prolactin, testosterone or FSH. Some practitoners prefer saliva tests for measurment of hormones.

I don’t know the preferred way to check for steroids.

I think a urine test can tell them how your body is breaking down minerals, vitamins and if you have a bladder infection and the results are faster.
Blood work up can give them more detail info.

hmmmm…the difference between the two test. With the urine test, the have you urinate in a cup. With the blood test, they take a needle and abstract bloodt from your vein.

Blood testing is often used to test for very recent drug use, i.e. within a couple hours of use. Urine testing detects drug use for a longer period of time more. Urine testing is one of the most common methods of testing because it is easier to administer and provides more accurate results.Jo Grzelinska, Information Officer, DrugInfo Clearinghouse at the Australian Drug Foundation.
