Do you know or have you ever known. Someone who can be labelled a real life Scrooge?

Asked by ucme (50047points) December 24th, 2009

Perhaps someone at work or a friend who either hated Christmas or was entirely wealth orientated.

I had an uncle, rest his soul, who would complain every Christmas when I was small about how much everything costs. He wasn’t married or had children. There were four of us and he gave us each $5.00 for Christmas. Of course, back then $5.00 was a lot to a child, but looking back he really ruined it for all of us with his constant complaining. To this day, I think he died an unhappy man.

I suspect there’s a bit of old Scrooge in all of us, which is is what makes “A Christmas Carol” a classic, and worth watching every year. The 1951 British version with Alastair Sim is my favorite.

One of my friends had an uncle who was very, very wealthy and hands down the stingiest man I have ever met. He wouldn’t attend any family gatherings because he knew he was only invited so they could get his money. He fired his house keeper because she wanted payed for her time. He’d pay her 2 hours and expect her to stay the 4 it took her to clean his pig sty. He had a collection of antique wood stoves, I was there one day when he said he would rather see them rust and rot than let anyone else have one. He wouldn’t sell them and he wouldn’t take care of them, in the end he got his way, they all were junk by the time he died. They would take him holiday dinners and like Scrooge he’d bah humbug then stuff his gob with ham and sweet potato pie.
