Careers in philosopy and schools in Canada?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) December 25th, 2009

I want to learn about futuristic science (and maybe play a part in creating it) but i don’t have the prerequisites for physics or engineering..I do however have the ability to enter the philosophy of physics? Where in north America can one get a Philosophy of Physics degree and other than writing books what kind of employment can one hope to obtain? (please don’t say ‘Fry cook’)

Actually, people with undergraduate degrees do quite well in many fields because training in philosophy allows for the broader understanding of problems, and their implications. Thinking deeply and analyzing the outcome before action is taken is an important skill to have in a lot of areas where relationships are complex. I recall reading an article about job satisfaction and compensation 10 years after college graduation, and that philosophy majors were happier and earned as much or more than all other degrees, primarily because they were management material.

That being said, it sounds like what you’re thinking about requires an undergraduate degree in physics, and a graduate degree in philosophy, because of the complexity of the subject matter. Physics is not something you can pick up “on the job” and in order to understand the implications, you have to understand the subject.

East Michigan University has articles on physics, ethics and public policy posted on their website that you may find of interest, and their program may be a good starting place to talk more in-depth with what your interests are.

Philosophy is inversely proportional to material success, that is a fundamental law of physics, that i hope you will quickly grasp.

If you have an interest in philosophy, do not listen to the technocrats who think of College as nothing but trade school and anything beyond locksmithing or blacksmithing as a total waste of human endeavor. Follow your dream.

Philosophy is the study of the fundamentals of the human thought process. It is foundational to all endeavors that call for critical thought, such as writing, politics, law, urban planning and so much more. Only a tiny percentage of those who major in philosophy go on to teach the subject or write on it. Most do not become philosophers, but put their understanding of structured thought and logic to work in other lines of endeavor. Here’s a good reference for how a philosophy degree prepares you for a lifetime career and what careers might best benefit from what you learn in the study of philosophy.

As to good schools in Canada, fo a Google search and look at review of each school it identifies.

@denidowi Be assured I meant no ill will to tradesmen. I worked my way through school as a carpenter building garages, additions and houses. I have tremendous respect for those who know how to actually make things work. But that respect includes those who know how to make their minds work, and do so for the betterment of their fellow men. :-)

ETpro, may I actually inform you, you are speaking to a man who has [you might say] ‘wastefully’ written 2 books proposed for the “betterment of their fellow men”.
Don’t waste your life, young man.
IF you have anything that would be of GENUINE benefit for Man, they mostly, will not listen to it, OR it will be placed in the “too hard baket”, as was mine!LOL

Stick to building up your country through economic means and to personally improving yourself as a person.

Don’t waste your life away.
May God be with you.

@denidowi How old are you to call me a young man? What gave you such an impression.

Thanks for the good wishes, and Happy New Year.

@ETpro – I believe there are plenty of opportunities outside of trades. Just not in Philosophy.

@ETpro – Thank you.
Yes; as Gecko says, there are many more constructive ways to serve your country than merely giving others what They will simply ‘construe’ as ‘just another opinion’, no matter How much merit that ‘opinion’ might truly possess in actuality. Almost everybody likes to consider themselves as ‘the expert philosopher’; so your knowledge or views will generally be treated as mere ‘dross’, especially if what you say requires others to make shifts or complete ‘conversions’ in thinking and acting.
Once people conceive that what you say may require them to live their lives differently, you’re out their door, as far as they are concerned!!

BTW, these days I tutor in mathematics and English and am just loving it; there is just not enough work in it for what we need!

@denidowi

Math and English, hey? There is ample work to be done tutoring in that, however getting paid to do that work requires that folks realize the work needs to be done.

What were your books about? Still in print? Titles?
