Wondering how many pictures will fit on my cameras memory card?

Asked by HotAsIce911 (156points) December 25th, 2009

My camera is 12 megapixels and the memory card is 2 gb. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me approximately how many pictures that would be able to hold?

Well acording to this site, 20,000 no matter what camera. That seems wrong, but that’s what it says.

I have an older digital camera and my memory card is 128MB and I get around 70, so you will get much more.

All three of my cameras show a read-out of number of pictures available on a memory chip (which is also dependent of what settings I’ve programed). Have you put it in and turned it on?

Most manufacturers will have printed, somewhere on their website, how many photos you’ll be able to handle.

There will be few occasions where you will want to shoot at the 12 mega pixel setting.

Unless you plan to enlarge the picture to much larger than say, 16” by 20”, a lower resolution will allow you to shoot more pictures, one after the other.

For landscapes of things like the Grand Canyon on a crystal clear day, when using a tripod, you will be gald to have the higher setting.

You Camera manual will no doubt have a chart that tells you how many pictures at a given resolution that a chip of a particular size will hold.

Don’t store all your pictures on your camera! Transfer then over to a computer and burn them onto CDs. Make your you back them up in more than one place and on more than one type of media.

Enjoy!

Highly variable!

It depends on whether you shoot at the fill 12MP or not and what format it’s in. I turned my 8MP camera down to 5MP which is enough to crop and still make a decent quality 8“x10” print. Since my camera store in JPEG format, I can store about 2800 5MP pics on my 4GB card.

I would guess about 400 or so an here is why: a 3MP camera can fit about 1800 pics into 2GB and you are shooting at four time the megapixels so you will store ¼ as many pics.

shooting at the highest quality, about 400 i’d say. and you should always shoot at the highest quality. so yeah. 400. WOO.

@deni – That is a matter of opinion. I mean, if you actually plan to blow it up to poster-sized or are taking pictures for forensic purposes where being able to zoom in and count knuckle-hairs on someone twenty feet away then yes. If your camera is 5 megapixels or less, then definitely. I’m not sayng you’re wrong (you aren’t), just that I don’t agree.
