I always look at the webpage of my insurance company to see who the providers are in my area, then I do some research on them.

But how can you really do research? I checked on the web--saw some rating, called the state to see if there was any issues, and then met the guy and he seemed good. But after he worked on my tooth, he was saying how lucky this was, and I frankly want someone who is a tad more confident about his work...

Do you have a primary care physician you like? If so, ask them for a referal.

Ava is right. Depending on what city you're in, there should be a listing of the "best dentists." Call them and ask them which dentists THEY go to. You may start to see patterns. Also, you can call a bunch of dentists in the phone book and ask them the same question. Basically, if a bunch of dentists trust someone with their teeth, that should probably be good enough for you.
