Does an autos tires make a stopping difference?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) December 26th, 2009

Two identical vehicles, weighing the same, on a concrete road have identical tires, except one vehicles tires are wider than the other. both are traveling at 50 mph and both hit the brakes at the same time. which vehicle has a greater stopping ability…..the vehicle with the wide tires or the vehicle with the narrow tires?

I am not an expert on this matter but it seems the wider the tire the more tread there is to stop the vehicle. Then again, I could be incorrect. Let’s see what the experts have to say.

It depends more on the tread design, the profile and the conditions than the width of the tire.

Not only yes, but HELL yes. Tread design is important, but a greater consideration is the mix, or compound of the rubber. Soft rubbers stick better, and wear out sooner. Harder rubbers wear longer, but don’t grab as well.
