Will Avatar start a trend?

Asked by Sandydog (1265points) December 29th, 2009 from iPhone

Will the film Avatar set a new benchmark for the filmviewing experience – thats the question thats on my mind after seeing it this afternoon?
My opinion of the effects themselves are that if I’d seen it in 2D, 80 percent of the film would have been the same.
At the cinema where I seen it they showed some adverts in 3D and they were very impressive, and almost stole the show from the film, so the question again was when does a director need to use 3D?
Be interesting to see if there“ll be more and more in 3D, now that the barrier has been raised?

I think it depends on if it makes enough money to be profitable. It cost an awful lot of money to make.

A trend of suck? That was already started. A trend of giant blue people? Cool.

As @Marina pointed out, it’s all about the Benjamins.

I really didnt think the 3d was over bearing in that movie. I felt it just gave stuff more depth. I believe the movie would have been just as good if seen in 2d

I hope not.

There were a LOT of movies advertised in 3D in the previews when I went to see Avatar in 3D. There were several, I remember that much, but they weren’t any that I was really interested in so I don’t remember what they are. I think that 3D should be limited to movies that really benefit from it. As for Avatar, I think it had just enough 3D and that much more than that can be kind of disconcerting.

I was SO thinking this question might be about female attire. ;D

The problem is that (most) people can’t watch 3D movies in their homes. Until it becomes commonplace, 3D movies will be the exception.

How much more difficult is it to make a movie in 3d? I’m sure someone could make a filter in some production software that would parse through the whole movie and make it 3d once the film was complete… then again.. I’m technologically impaired. What do I know?

avvooooooo's avatar

@phoenyx They also offered it on 2D in the theater that I went to. It’ll be a while, if ever, before 3D is offered exclusively.

3D is being heavily developed and lots of films in production will utilise the technology.

New blu ray and a TV with a high enough definition to show 3D in the home (in it’s new impressive aspect) are due in the next year or so.

I can’t wait until they start making games in 3d. I think that the largest obstacle is that you need a tv capable of producing 120 frames per second, alternating between two different polarized views for the left and right eyes. It’s certainly possibly with todays tech, but not exactly cost effective.I’d expect a tv like that to cost at least three times as much once they mass produce them =(
Definition isn’t the issue at all, TVs today have plenty of that.

With DVD rentals becoming cheaper, I feel the theater experience must be more competitive in order to out shine or provide an experience you can only have by going to a 3d film otherwise people will start waiting for the DVD

p.s. Avatar was fantastic in 3D :)

The trend of making big 3D films that are remakes of Dances with Wolves?

Depends on how much cash it made.

Unfortunately.
