Where to return a lost wallet?

Asked by Xann009 (876points) January 1st, 2010

I went for a walk early this morning and found someones wallet on the ground near my house. I want to return it, but don’t really want to meet up with them. Should I turn it into a police station? Or I can drop it off at their probation counselor, which is nearby. What do you think the best course of action would be?

Toss it in the mail. I used to do it all the time after I took the money out of it.

The Post will get it to the right person.

Hah, great idea. No cash in it, I’m afraid.

Take it to the police, as you do with all lost items.

Take it to the police station with the cash in it (if you have any self respect).

@stranger_in_a_strange_land Like I said, no cash was in it. I think someone might have gotten there first O.o

1. Search in it for his/her card; if there is, call him/her and tell you found it.
2. Otherwise, hand it over to police.

Good ideas from everybody, but someone needs to say—guess I’ll be the first—Kudos, Xann009 , for trying so hard to return the wallet.

You have their address (I’m assuming), so I would go put it in their mail box. Then there is no hassle of involving another party (police/post office employee) and that person will find it without you having to meet up with them.

As @Austinlad said, good on ya for trying so hard to return this to it’s rightful owner.

I agree with the choice of returning it to the police. If something nefarious has befallen the person, they may not be there at the other end to receive the item. If you give it to the police, they would know if it might have evidentiary value (did someone steal the wallet from the person, is the person now deceased, etc.).

I would not recommend having contact with the person and I am particularly curious what was in the wallet that let you know the person has a probation officer. All the more reason why I would not recommend contact with the individual!

What I have done in the past is:

1) If there is a handy police officer I give it to them.

2) Mail it to whatever residential address is on the license or id card, and don’t put a return address.

3) Mail it to their employer (I did that with a wallet that contained a bus driver’s name badge), or their probation officer, or someone else that can be assumed to know where the person is located.
