Can you wear Harley Davidson clothing if you don't have a Harley Davidson motorcycle?

Asked by mrjadkins (1256points) January 1st, 2010

I would like to own one in the future but don’t right now. Is it appropriate for me to go ahead and purchase HD clothing if I don’t have an HD motorbike? A friend says that I would be “douchey” if I did such a thing. Is this a “douche” move?

I’ve worn a Red Wings jersey and I don’t have an ownership stake in the hockey team, so I don’t see why not. It would simply seem that you are a fan of that brand of bike. I certainly hope that that bikers don’t have fashion police!

You are a free agent. Your friend sounds like an idiot, you should forgive me.

I love Harley clothing and I don’t have a motorcycle. They have retail clothing stores all over, they never check to see if I own a Harley before I buy a shirt. Seriously, my husband had a Honda for a while and it would not have stopped him from wearing a Harley clothing.

Your friend sounds like a douche. Do you what you want and tell your “friend” to f-off if he has a problem. Also, be what you are, do what you want and forget what others think. If you aren’t hurting anyone else who cares.

Do bikers worry about being douches? I never really thought about that.

Sure why not, just like the other guy said “I’ve worn a Red Wings jersey and I don’t have an ownership stake in the hockey team” I have Vancouver Canucks, hats Jersey’s, memorabilia.

Especially if you plan on getting a bike, you might as well get the clothes now since once you own it you’re not going to have as much money for them! Just be prepared to explain yourself if anybody asks you what kind of bike you have, ha ha.

Of course, it is OK! The Harley people would be disappolinted if you didn’t. Lots of people who don’t own the bikes wear the clothing and gear.

Your friend is equating wearing a brand of clothes with being a poser. This does not apply unless you are also wearing leather chaps and harness boots.~ :)

I own a Harley and do not wear Harley brand clothes. Does your friend think I am out of uniform?

dpworkin's avatar

I wonder why your “friend” wants to diminish your pleasure.

My ex has a Harley, and many friends have them, too. Here’s the deal… it’s the ‘poser’ thing that @Dog was referring to. ‘Serious’ bikers rarely actually wear Harley clothing, except the T-shirts and a jacket. Maybe some boots. In the circle my ex rode in, they even made fun of other Harley riders who insisted on decking themselves out in Harley gear from head to toe: jeans, shirt, jacket, boots, gloves, chaps, etc.

That said, if you’re asking if you can buy and wear a t-shirt or a jacket without having the bike, I think that’s fine. Just don’t become a parody of a biker, be yourself instead.

At least it’s not an Ed Hardy shirt…

better than wearing porsche gear, thats sad even when you have one!!

If i wore a santa suit at christmas would that entitle me to the rest of the year off… exactly!

LeopardGecko's avatar

@ucme – It depends on where you were and how you were acting. It could very well give you the year off! jk.

@sakura Crap, I’ve been trying to find a Porsche girl-cut shirt that I like. Are you serious?

Berserker's avatar

A lot of people who don’t have bikes wear the clothes. At least in my town, it seems almost everyone does.
I don’t see the problem.

Just make sure the Harley Police don’t discover you don’t have a bike yet and decide to confiscate it till you do have your bike~~~

:D

I wear leather chaps constantly and I am not one, nor have ever been one of the Village People.—actually,no—Wear what ever you want and don’t let others tell you how to live your life. It’s too short!!:))

Sure, just like a city slicker can put on a cowboy hat, jeans, and a western-style shirt and say he’s “yee-hawwing” cowboy. Disguise is always possible! Just know your stuff though. If someone comes up to you and starts asking you about Harley Davidson motorcycles, you better know a thing about them or two. :D

OpryLeigh's avatar

I wear Harley gear but although I, personally, don’t have one my SO does.

Dog's avatar

I want to be sure I was not misunderstood. When I see someone wearing Harley brand clothes I do not think they are posing. If I think anything it is “Cool- a person with good taste.” :)

loser's avatar

Isn’t that the first step to owning a HD?

My friend wears Harley boots even though she rides a Yamaha. They fit, are sturdy and comfortable, and they were on sale.

I would suspect that if you dress head to toe in Harley gear, whether you have a bike or not, some people would think you were weird or trying to show off, since Harley charges extra for the “privilege” of having their logo on your clothes. But a t-shirt or a belt buckle, nah, that would be okay.

rooeytoo's avatar

Only if it says “Motor Mothers” or something like that along with a skull and crossbones.
If you are going to wear that you better be a member of the club!

@JLeslie was thinking about the friends episode were Joey wears all the gear!!!

JLeslie's avatar

@sakura I don’t remember that episode. LOL. My husband and I were just in Vegas and we were all excited there is a Porsche store there. Unfortunately, everything was the very expensive luggage, sunglasses, watches, and jackets. I just want a t-shirt.

What @augustlan said.
I used to ride with my ex.
I wouldn’t over do it.
I still have my chaps, they are nice for things other than riding on the road…

birdland33's avatar

My winter gloves and chaps are Harley, my bike is a Honda.

The gear works, that’s what I own, that’s what I wear. My comfort, especially on a 26 degree morning, is more important than the notion that someone may think I am ‘douchey’.
