What's the best place in NYC to buy and enjoy BOTH a great cup of coffee and a scrumptious bagel?

Asked by andrewmgsutton (162points) January 3rd, 2010

Any suggestions for great bagel joints in NYC that also serve a great cup of coffee… or hmm, even a great glass of OJ?

No such thing. Columbia Hot Bagels on Broadway and 110 for the best bagels, your own tastes must guide you to good coffee. CHB does have freshly squeezed OJ.

coffee everyone has their own opinions on. bagels – some people like them bready, some like them traditional. i think i used to go to david’s bagels but that was about 8 years ago. that was on upper east side.

cornbird's avatar

I HOP. When I visited the NY, I had a really good breakfast there.

jca's avatar

@cornbird : yeah but do they have good bagels?

cornbird's avatar

Yes they do. I saw some nice ones in the showcase.

cornbird's avatar

Another good place that I have experienced is Dunkin Doghnuts. They have really good bagels and coffee.

jca's avatar

@cornbird : are you joking?

cornbird's avatar

No im not, why do you ask?

jca's avatar

@cornbird : The best bagel in all of NYC would be IHOP or Dunkin Donuts?

dpworkin's avatar

One day @cornbird will encounter a good bagel and have an epiphany.

I don’t know about the bagels themselves or coffee, but there’s this one place in Brooklyn that has really nice lox spread you can put on your bagels. I forgot the name, I’ll come back when I remember.

cornbird's avatar

@jca Well im not really from the nyc but im just realating what I have experienced. I liked them at dunkin doughnuts and at I HOP. Im not really a bagel and coffee fan either but I tried it.

jca's avatar

@cornbird : to me, a Dunkin Donuts bagel on the scale of bagelness is equivalent to a McDonald’s hamburger on the scale of burgerness. Tastes somewhat like a hamburger, tastes somewhat like a bagel, but to someone who has ever had a real hamburger or bagel, does not compare. Dunkin Donuts coffee, however, i would agree it’s good, but that’s just me.

cornbird's avatar

@jca I like a McDonald’s burger but I think the BurgerKing is sooo much better.

jca's avatar

@cornbird : ok i can’t be sure but i am going to write your comments off as sarcasm.

cornbird's avatar

@jca lol . Like I said im not from the US i just visited there for summer. Im really from the caribbean, and people dont really go for those things as much as you guys over there so I dont know as much as you do. I have yet to experience.

jca's avatar

@cornbird : you can advise me on where i can get the best jerk chicken!! I love jerk chicken!!

cornbird's avatar

@jca Down here!! Well Rib House serves good jerk. The Jamaicans serves some good ones as well.

Well, the best smoked fish in the city is at Barney Greengrass, the Sturgeon King. Their coffee and bagels are pretty excellent, too, but the fish is just amazing.

For straight-up great bagels, try H&H. Good stuff, and they have a few locations.

dpworkin's avatar

There is no comparison between Colombia Hot Bagels and H&H. But for mentioning Barney Greengrass, you get extra lurve. You may also wish to try Russ and Daughters on Houston Street. (They get their bagels from CHB, as does Zabars.)

Thanks for the tip! I’m not too far from Houston and 1st; may have to head over there later today. From the reviews, the line is always out the door but it sounds like it’s worth it.

Sometimes my roommate will go to Park Slope to Bagel Hole, but we’re all in Brooklyn, so…

These people are saying Murray’s and Times Square Hot Bagels are the best in Manhattan.

uniquenewyork's avatar

Depends on the neighborhood, for sure. Ess-a-bagel has the best bagels, hands down. It’s old school on 21st and 1st Avenue.

H&H is great, but you can’t really sit there so I’m taking it out of contention.

That leaves my personal favorite that delivers coffee, bagels (and fresh squeezed OJ): Absolute Bagels on Broadway between 107 and 108th Avenues

dpworkin's avatar

@uniquenewyork Absolute is better than Columbia Hot? Blasphemy! And Ess-a-Bagel is OK if you’re at the hospital.

Oh my god this thread is a disaster. Dunkin Donuts? I HOP? Cornbird, why would you answer this question if you admit to not being a bagel or coffee fan? And how did we get to talking about Jerk Chicken and Burger King?

@andrewmgsutton : Ess-a-Bagel or H&H in the city. But if you want to make a small trek out to Queens, it’s Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company in LIC. That’s all you need to know. These bagels are as fresh as they come, and like all truly good bagels, don’t need to be toasted – they’re already hard and crispy on the outside and warm and chewy on the inside. Great spreads too.

Russ and Daughters is AWESOME for smoked fish. Don’t know much about their bagels though.

For me, it’s H&H hands down for the bagels. When I was in college, we would make road trips to NYC specifically to get those bagels. I think they serve coffee as well, but that didn’t even matter to us. :-)

Dunking Doughnuts has the very best coffee on the planet. don’t even mention Starbucks to me. they burn their beans and burned beans means burned coffee. not sure about bagels. i am not a bagel man. ask me a question about doughnuts and you know i am an expert on that subject.

Dunkin Doughnuts coffee…...........AAAAA 5-star rating.

My reccomendation is to go to Starbucks on 95th and Madison might be 96, not quite sure and then get a bagel on Fresh Bagels on Madison on 96th street, sit in the back, and have both. It’s a nice quiet place. It’s never really crowded, and the bagels are delicious.

janbb's avatar

@pdworkin I don’t even have to ask, I know you are the bagel maven!

As someone born and raised in Manhattan, it pains me deeply to see Dunkin Doughnuts and IHOP even mentioned in a thread about good bagels. AAAAAAH! Dunkin Doughnuts bagels?? Please, please don’t do that if looking for an authentic bagel experience.

1. Proceed immediately to H&H bagels on 80th and Broadway.
2. Ask if the cinnamon raisin bagels are still warm.
If so:
3. Purchase one and eat immediately, biting through the delicious dense outside and letting the soft inside melt on your tongue.

I’m not a coffee drinker, but I imagine that Zabar’s cafe across the street probably has some good coffee to go with your bagel.

occ's avatar

p.s. if cinnamon raisin bagels are not still warm, get any other bagel – they’re all good…but nothing quite matches the hot fresh cinnamon raisin bagels.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

I second @occ on the H&H raisin-cinnamon bagels. They’re divine, especially when hot!
