Do you think certain sports are difficult to understand?

Asked by Ansible1 (4841points) January 3rd, 2010

Initially I would say curling, but I kinda get it- get your stone close to the middle and knock the others out, but after watching sports highlights on BBC world news I’m going to have to say cricket. It kinda looks like baseball but I have no knowledge of any rules. Of course you could look online and find out rules to whatever sport you like, I’m asking with your current knowledge, is there a sport you are just clueless about how it’s played?

Another vote for Cricket. I’ve watched it and tried to understand it, but with no luck. Something still eludes me.

Cricket and Bocci ball. I kind of understand cricket, then what I thought I understood turns out to be completely wrong.

I would have to say real cricket. At my camp they kinda made up a game called Chinese cricket, but apparently it’s nothing like the real game. Then there’s lacrosse. It’s fun to watch, but I don’t really understand the rules.

Soccer. Sorry, I know you have to get the ball into the net, but what the heck do they keep stopping for. There are so many around the ball at one time, I don’t know how the referees can ever tell anything. But if I’m surfing channels I always stop and look for a few minutes. It seems to me that soccer guys are in REALLY great shape. Thy all seem to have better builds than any other sport out there, ‘cept maybe volley ball, and I can’t bear to see a man in speedos.

Here is the deal on cricket… There is a batsman, and a bowler( the one who throws the ball at the batsman). Basically what the game is about is the bowler must try to knock down the wicket(Three wooden sticks behind the batsman). The batsman must make RUNS(points) by hitting the ball and running to one wicket on the other side of the pitch and back. The batsman can get out by either getting the wicket knocked down or getting the ball caught. The team with the most runs in the over wins. A difficult game to understand for me is water polo.

Cricket explained from a tea towel:

Cricket explained: You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out. When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

Underwater River Dance Synchronized Swimming was one I never could quite understand.

@cornbird Thank you. Now I get it. My camp’s version of it isn’t that different, it turns out. Cool.

NASCAR – Driving in a circle? Sure, there is a bit of precision there, but largely it’s a test of endurance; how many laps can you do before you fall asleep from boredom. At least most other forms of auto racing turn right!

Professional Baseball – Not so much the game, but why do we pay these guys millions of dollars to do what many school-kids do for free (and often better!)?

Golf – Do you really need to hog that much real estate in order to press like a pimp and get drunk?

So who’s gonna explain curling?

jerv's avatar

Probably some Canadian.

Cricket is kind of weird. Curling is a little strange. Rugby had me scratching my head on more than one occasion.

I like sports, and I like them intricate, but cricket makes absolutely no fucking sense.

@Rarebear. Thanks for a good laugh. I can’t decipher your explanation but it makes for humorous reading. =)

@Mike_Hunt I looove Calvin and Hobbes!!!

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

And of course there’s blernsball. Who knows how to explain that?

janbb's avatar

I can’t understand cricket although it’s been explained to me many times. OTOH, my husband does not get football (American) at all.

Curling? Isn’t it just bocce ball on ice?

Bluefreedom's avatar

@janbb. It’s closer to Shuffleboard on ice, I think.

I always wondered what all those lines and stuff on hockey rings are supposed to mean, or dictate…I figure, get the puck into the opponent team’s net, and that’s it, but maybe not?

I have no interest in sports though, so I never much bothered to try and figure it out.

Quidditch also seems weird too me. Lulz.

An American friend once tried to explain the rules of baseball to me. Just thinking about it still gives me a headache. I think you have to grow up with it to be able to appreciate it.
