Question about headaches often mostly in the morning?

Asked by elize (4points) January 3rd, 2010

I have been having these headaches quite often mostly in the morning when I get up . Sometimes the nite before I will have pop before going to sleep for the nite. I asked my doctor about is it the pop that is giving me the headaches, but she says it may not be that at all it may be something else. It may have something to do with my eating habits. Because, i take high blood pressure pills have been since my son was born about 2yrs now. My doctor says it has to do with my weight. I am 230 lbs and about 5’4. What can I do about this?

Not sure what it might be in your case, but I know that if I have a lot of carbs or sugar before I sleep, I end up with nightmares, and wake up feeling sick.

Maybe try a week without eating sugar right before going to bed (1 hour buffer) and see if you still keep getting the headaches?

At your weight and with HTN, I’d say you are a good candidate for sleep apnea. A lack of 02 during the night could cause headaches in the morning.

Do you grind your teeth?
Caffeine withdrawal can give you nasty headaches.

When you say POP what exactly do you mean?
is it possible it’s maybe a sinus thing? maybe one of your sinuses is blocked or has closed over? I know this can cause headaches in some people.
Your doctor would likely have checked this but the pop thing has intriqued me.

I think she might mean Soda by saying pop – that gave me a pause too.

You might have a vertebra out of place. That gives me morning headaches. And the blood pressure pills could give you a morning headache.

Sometimes if I’m really hungry in the morning, the low blood sugar can give me a headache and make me cranky. If you’re eating a lot of sugar before bed (and soda/pop has a ton of sugar), that can make you rev up with insulin to bring down the sugar and then cause a drastic crash. Might you be diabetic/borderline diabetic/insulin resistant? Based on your size numbers, it might be worth looking into.

Not meant to treat, prevent, cure, or diagnose any disease, of course.

@SarasWhimsy Ah, ok, lol. Yup, too much sugar before bed time can mess with your head too, try cutting down on that gradually at first.

(sorry for the misunderstanding)

Try taking your blood pressure immediately when you wake up. Given your history, the blood pressure and hypopnea could be the culprits. If you sleep on your back, try getting a pillow for sleep apnea, or propping pillows so that you are forced to sleep on your side.

My guess on the sugar and pop is that it would have been metabolized by the time you wake, so it’s probably not the root cause.

When do you take your BP meds? A researcher gave us a talk once and said some people need to take the one-a-day type of pills at bedtime. You might ask your dr about that. High BP can cause headaches.

apparently hang overs are due to dehydration and lack of minerals, and maybe you’re experiencing the same thing. if the doctor suggested something is amiss with your diet, maybe try the cure for a hangover too – water/gatorade before sleeping ;p

Or you might need glasses.

I agree that the culprit is mostly likely dehydration. During your sleep cycle, you process all of the fluids…everything is digested. Hence the intensely satisfying pee when you first wake up. Tomorrow morning, look at your pee and observe the hue of yellow. The darker your urine, the more dehydrated you are. You should be drinking water preferably through out your day, even if it’s just a glass every 2 hours. If that sounds like a lot to you, then you are neglecting your body and blood vessels the amount of fluids needed to correctly function and circulate.
