In Call of Duty: World at War, is it possible to create a better split screen mode.

I’m not sure if I’ve got the settings proper as my split screen mode has doesn’t show up the way it regularly does in games. Instead of having the entire half of the top and bottom screen consisting of the game, the top half has a black area on the, right consisting of about 20% of the total area, as does the bottom but the black area is on the left. It seems pretty stupid to have it set up this way so I believe there is a way to change it. If anybody knows please answer!
