Could you open a portal to the future and be able to understand what is going on?

It’s fiction. Made up. Imaginary.

Of course you can go to the future! Let me warm up my Delorian and let’s go. I suppose it depends on how far into the future you go, whether or not you would understand what was going on. 15 minutes would probably not blow your mind.

There are universal concepts that never change as long as humanity is involved in the picture. Greed & the accumulation of wealth, misinformation & disinformation, stereotypes & pointless prejudices, materialism, and lots of the baser human motivations will not change. They were the same before the Great Pyramids were built and will be the same in the last days of people existing on Earth.

at the moment general relativity suggests it could be theoretically possible to travel backwards in time but this may not stand up over the long run as quantum mechanics suggests the conditions necessary may not exist. Special relativity allows for future travel through the twin paradox, which basically says if twinA is on earth and twinB flies off on a round trip at nearly the speed of light when twinB returns twinB will have aged less than twinA.

As to understanding what we see, I suppose that has more to do with how much culture/humanity/earth change during the elapsed time.

One idea.. but it’s not too terribly much different than living your life.

Two possible futures stand before you. You decide which one you will enter into. Look at the time, add 1 minute. Soon it will be that time. If you get off your seat and do 3 jumping jacks. You will soon be in a future where the time is T+1minute and those 3 jumping jacks are complete. But there’s no turning back. Your other option is of course to just sit there and soon it will be T+1minute and those three jumping jacks will not be done.

Either way, you’re in the portal right now. Soon you’ll be out of it and experiencing that future. You can replace 1 with whatever time extension you want. You can replace the jumping jacks with whatever activity you want.
