How to keep daffodil bulbs?

Asked by serendipity (225points) January 6th, 2010

I just got today some daffodil bulbs from a friend. Since I don’t think this is planting season (I live in Southern VA) what should I do to keep the daffodil bulbs? (No my friend didn’t know what to do – she had gotten them from someone else). Any thoughts are appreciated!

Can you still dig holes in the soil? If so, plant now. Ideally, daff bulbs go into the ground in the fall.

I don’t know exactly when heavy frost hits S. VA. Check this site out; The VA Cooperative Extension has mts. of info.

“Storage. If bulbs are bought before planting time, keep them in a cool, dry place. A temperature of 60° to 65°F is cool enough to prevent bulbs from drying out until time for planting. Temperatures higher than 70°F will damage the flower inside spring-flowering bulbs. Rhizomes, tubers, and tuberous roots are more easily desiccated than bulbs and corms, and should be stored in peat, perlite, or vermiculite.”

Yes, if you can get them in the ground now, do. They need six weeks of cold and dark to bloom. Otherwise, if you have an extra refrigerator, like in the garage or basement, store them in there until October – November of next year.
