How dangerous is Peru right now?

Asked by Trillian (21148points) January 7th, 2010

I had been thinking about taking a trip to Peru this spring or summer. When I said something to a girlfriend at lunch yesterday, she said something about “The shining silver path”. At first I thought she was talking about the Ayahuasca experience, which is why I want to go. But no, I guess it’s some sort of Guerrilla group. Now I don’t claim to be right on top of every news event, but I’ve never heard of any problems in Peru. I hope at some time that it becomes safe to go to Nepal, and more specifically Kashmir, but Peru? What is going on? I’d be interested to learn any details that anybody knows about.

Sendero Luminoso is still quite active – they killed a number of people in 2009. That being said, if you stay near the tourist haunts and the cities you will likely be fine.

I haven’t heard anything too outrageous but don’t have any first hand experience or know anyone who currently lives there. These sites might help you with specifics:
