Get a voice coach, so that you do it correctly and don’t do any inadvertent damage.

Start by lifting your arms above your head and breathe a fiew times stretching to the sky to lift your ribcage increasing your lung capacity, hold your stomach muscles as you lower your arms and then relax still holding. Ok Now breathe in and then Exhale in short bursts holding your stomach creating light pressure in your breath and let the air out in Short Two Second Bursts (like a soft eeek, eeek ,eeek ) until you need to inhale again. these are like doing Sit-Ups only for your voice, the better pressure and control you have the better you can hit the Notes! after a little practice try singing along with your favorite music! Good Luck…

First of all it’s important to use the right muscles and right breathing. It’s vital to sing in a way that won’t damage your vocal cords. By doing this you alos get more power and depth in your voice. Don’t imitate the “modern Pop Idol way of sining”, since it’s not much of singing, more like moaning… :) And dare to use your voice, be confident and know that you’re great!

@jazzjeppe what songs should i try singing?

Sing songs you like. Start by easy songs and then challenge yourself with a bit more difficult songs where you have to use your entire registry. As Phil says, songs with sustained notes are good for practicing keeping pitch etc.

(sorry, my English isn’t good enough for this kind of dicussion even if I have been teaching music for many years)

I’d suggest finding lyrics you can associate with, or relate to, and sing those – the added emotional attachment you’ll feel while singing them, will help you sing without attempting to sound any specific way – giving you “your own” sound. Also, rather than sing along with the vocal version of the songs, try to find the instrumental – or even karaoke version. That too, will help prevent you from trying to sound like someone else. The less you try to sound like the song/artist, the more you’ll sing with everything you’ve got – thereby strengthening your voice just by using it fully. :)

My suggestion is when singing keep your head straight, I used to have a tendancy to throw my head back a little and my tutor always pulled me up on it.
Another one is to stand with a good posture so that you sing from the bottom of your lungs, it gives you more power in your voice. Hope this helps ^^
