How do foreign students pay for University in the U.S.

Asked by LKidKyle1985 (6594points) January 7th, 2010

I have a friend from overseas who would like to study in the United States but he does not have nearly enough money to study here. I was wondering how all the other foreign students do it? I know there are many students who don’t pay for anything and get to go to school here. How does this work?

When I was in college, all the foreign students at the state schools PAID out of state (non-resident) fees. They also had to have and maintain a student visa. I was in grad school at a private college with several foreign students but they were sponsored by RICH relatives.

All students pay something, there is no free college that I know of in the USA.

Sure but they get loans or grants? I know many studens at OSU who do not have the money and still go.

That’s called MAJOR student loans. They just don’t pay today. Foreign students would have a tough time getting US grants and loans.
If the they left the country who is going to pay make?
Private schools can be several “ten’s of thousand of dollars” or more.

The way to go is to explore the opportunities for loans, bursaries and scholarships, beginning with one’s home country. Also, check out the available information at the nearest United States Information Agency or the embassy. Most West Indian students are supported by family, or have scholarships/loans. In addition, an exceptional score in the SAT will qualify a student for some grants – I know one young woman who won a scholarship to Harvard on the strength of her SATs. There is really no easy way if you are not a citizen or resident of that country and you have no money.

Some countries give their students vouchers to study abroad (meaning in the US).

my roommate who is from Jamaica has relatives in the US that cosign her loans so it’s possible for them to get US loans but I think they have to have people in the US that will be responsible if anything happens. If not why would anyone bother to come- paying out of pocket for college is impressive.

Exactly how do you know this? I suspect you are misinformed. You need to find out where the money for these foreign students is really coming from. There is no such thing as students attending school without paying for it.

There are not many students who study in the US without paying anything. That is ridiculous. There are loans that this person could take out, or he could put it off for a few years and work to save enough money. Whatever happens, he will need to pay for university.
