Do you believe a change in your countrys' national anthem is overdue & if so let's hear alternative suggestions, humour welcome?

Asked by ucme (50047points) January 8th, 2010

I’m English & God save the Queen really needs to be replaced. Not sure what with, perhaps mad dogs & englishman or maybe something upbeat like Jerusalem. Why have a national anthem anyway other than to play at the Olympics & other grand events?

I really would like to see our very hard to sing national anthem replaced, but I find it highly unlikely that songs of today can take its place in people’s entrenched hearts and minds.

America the beautiful has been suggested as has This Is My Country.

@mammal Never heard that one can you hum me a few bars?

@Marina Can you imagine the political fight that would ensue over changing the national anthem? The Star Spangled Banner isn’t so bad compared to going through that.

My vote would go to “This Land is Your Land.”

However i would be in favour of this variation

Ours sounds better en francais.

O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux.
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix.
Ton histoire est une épopée,
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

And, I’ll sing it to you all, too.

Sorry you feel that way. :-)

I cherish my national anthem.

@mammal That’s what i’ve been singing for years. Don’t know why the powers that be object to it.

I kind of like the music of The Star Spangled Banner. It has the kind of soul-stirring quality you want in an anthem (even if it used to be an English drinking song), but the lyrics are out-dated. It was written from the point of view of a little sprout of a country that was standing up to the big, bad Brits, and managing to hang in there despite the pounding we were taking. But now that we’re the tough guys on the block with all the fancy war power, it all just sounds awkwardly ironic. Time to sing about something more positive than “Hey look, you can’t squash us!”.

Far above Tattooine
under bright twin suns’ light
‘cross the heavens it sailed
turbolasers a-beaming
Flying through the bright stars
in a perilous fight
came Lord Vader’s great ship
that the princess was fleeing

At the title’s fanfare, ‘twas a movie so rare
that we saw long ago, and today we’re still there!
Oh say we love Star Wars, we’ll quote and we’ll rave
We were born Star Wars freaks, and we’ll be to the grave!

@stratman37 A refreshing change this would make young padawan. The dark side in you I sense.

The American national anthem never needs to change. Changing it would crush a long standing tradition.. one of the last traditions of honor we have left in this country.
