How can kids make their own free web pages?

Asked by lexipoorocks (146points) January 9th, 2010

Ok so I need to make a website just you know for fun.. Where I can put a little biography or whatever, customize it, add pics, and stuff like that. And it has to be a kid friendly website and when I say that I mean under the age of 13. Just you know a quick webpage and I say under the age of 13 because a lot of my friends will want to make a website too. And it has to be 100% free. No hidden fees or anything like that. And it doesn’t matter if it has pop-up adds because i won’t click on them anyway. I will be really grateful to a person who can answer my question! Thanks so much!

Have you heard of Piczo?

Try google page creator. Or, you know, you could learn a really valuable skill and learn HTML and CSS. I’d go for the second option, it’s something you can use all your life.

w3schools: start here

Stay away from Webs.com (formally Freewebs.com). In the beginning, its a great service with a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor, along with an HTML one. But the hosting there stinks, and it has a reputation for being crappy (for lack of a better term).

For your purposes, I suggest Google Sites. Its free and comes with many freebies such as ready to use templates. Editing a website there is like using Microsoft Word, its fairly easy and fast. The only drawback is you have to have a Google account to access and use the service.

Tip: Learn a little HTML first before creating your website. Studying basic CSS after you understand HTML won’t hurt either, since it has the advantage over HTML code. :)

@reactor5 Google Page Creator is no longer available.

I highly recommend 2kmegs if you’re more on the savvy side of things. I used that for quite a while until I progressed to paid hosting.

If not, I’d go with Yola, Wix (which is wonderful for flash sites, by the way), Webs or Weebly.

I’ve used Yola, Wix and Webs. They do the job.

I agree with @Spinel, studying HTML or CSS is definitely a good idea. There are very few commands you’d ever need to know to get going with what you’re talking about. And the languages should be around for a fair while.

There you go: a free web page.

Creating HTML documents is free. The space on which to store the HTML so other people can see the pages is not free. Your service provider might include some storage space as part of your Internet service — ask them.

WSYIWYG HTML editors and drag-and-drop editors are a lazy way to do it. Folks have suggested learning to write HTML and related scripting languages? Good idea.
