What is your favorite brand of lotion and why?

Asked by jlm11f (12413points) January 10th, 2010

I’m looking for a new lotion. Characteristics should include non-greasiness, portability and effective for yucky winters which make your hands dry! Also, I don’t want it to have too strong a fragrance. No fragrance at all works too. I’ve tried quite a few lotions (avon, bath&body works, victoria’s secret), and many of them are okay or decent but I just want to make sure I am not missing out on some amazing lotion. Obviously, I don’t want to pay too much $$ for something like this, so keep price in mind. Thanks!

PS – Yes I know vaseline is awesome for dry hands, but its greasy and not really usable when out and about.

Crabtree and Evelyn’s Cocoa Butter. It’s thick, not greasy and has a unique smell. I use it after showering.

Amlactin is a pharmacological product. Not a cosmetic balm. Three different strengths, XL is the mega healer. No grease. No stink. Incredibly effective.

Neutrogena has a lotion, Norwegien Fishernan’s hand cream. It works!!

I like hemp lotion because of it’s symbol and aloe vera cream because it isn’t greasy and is really good for the skin

I like Bag Balm and Corn Huskers Lotion.
My hands are a mess in the winter, I need something strong.
I’ll be watching to see if there is anything better I could try.

I have to wash my hands multiple times all day long at work, and most lotions leave my hands feeling too dry – too many “inactive” ingredients, I think including a little alcohol sometimes.

I prefer balms. @wilma suggested one I’ve had good success with, Bag Balm if you don’t mind the medicinal smell. I also like Farmer’s Friend and lotion bars made by local crafters. Look for ingredients like beeswax, cocoa butter, almond oil, shea butter.

I like St. Ives Renewing Collagan Elastin. It soaks in quickly and leaves you feeling soft. It also has no intense lingering scent. I like to wear
perfume and the lotion doesn’t interfere with their scents.

I don’t know much about harsh winters, but it does get dry here and my skin never feels irritated or dry.

I like Sarna lotion. It’s known for it’s ability to soothe irritated skin, has no scent, and is not greasy. It’s also a reasonable price and can be found at your local mega-mart or pharmacy.

I use Dove Cream Oil, which I’ve found to be super effective and non-greasy. However, it does have some fragrance to it (though not overpowering).

I used to use Lubriderm Daily Moisture, which is fragrance-free, and it also worked very well without being greasy.

I got lubriderm for healing my tattoos and kept it because it’s unscented and gets the job done. Too many other skin and hair product has a scent, and I’m trying to limited the number of distinct scents I pile on my body. I’ve also liked Vasoline’s unscented lotion.

Sofia Loren apparently uses olive oil, though I don’t like the idea of using an oil, sounds messy.

Damn, people have a lot of different tastes in lotion. This is going to be harder than I thought.

Quench by Oil of Olay is great for the legs. It does have a fragrance but I don’t mind it. Gloves In A Bottle is the best for the hands. see www.glovesinabottle.com

I love Palmers Coco Butter products, they are relatively inexpensive, work well, soak in quickly and you smell like chocolate all day!.

I also like Inecto Coconut products for the same reasons. Their shampoo and conditioner are great as well.

And if you wear them both at the same time, you smell like a chocolate coconut cake, what could be better!

@rooeytoo My wife wears Palmer’s lotion. She always comes to bed smelling like baked goods. Yummy.

I’m picky. I have sensitive skin, I like natural smells, and I feel that sustainable living is important. Their large containers will last you forever. The souffle ones are spectacular, but easy to go through quickly. I got a small pack of theirs and keep a mini-container that was in it with me all the time for lotion needs.

The pure shea butter is oily and less refreshing, but really helps take care of the problem instead of just make it more comfortable. The whipped shea butter/souffle makes it more comfortable but doesn’t do as good a job of taking care of the problem.

Now is the time to order it, because it melts at body temp and so sometimes will arrive during the summer liquidey.

Oh I also forgot Udderly Smooth is amazing.

delirium's avatar

Udder cream is also fantabulous, yes. I forgot about that for a moment.

Yes!! Lotion!! Uh, right now, I love Nature’s Gate’s lotion for sensitive skin. It’s cheap for organic stuff and you get a lot of it. You should buy it =)

Burt’s Bees – their Milk & Honey lotion but most of their stuff is pretty good

i really like olay quench. it smells good and keeps skin mosturized for a long time.

One other thought – several of my patients have told me their dermatologists have suggested Eucerin.

I use ‘Look Ma, New Hands’ by Bath and Body Works. It isn’t greasy and has a citrus/orange scent that isn’t too bold. It has paraffin in it to protect skin.

At night time I use a chapstick for the cracks in my fingers. By morning they are healed!

ccrow's avatar

I usually use Lubriderm; have heard Eucerin is good, too.

wilma's avatar

@autumn43 I’m going to try the Chapstick on the cracks that I get on the tips of my fingers. Are yours just a cold weather/winter thing too?

rooeytoo's avatar

A good cure for the painful splits on the ends of fingers or just severely chapped hands is to rub plain old vaseline all over your hands then wear gloves. Of course you do this at bed time and they are always better by morning.

ccrow's avatar

@rooeytoo I used to do that when my kids were in diapers; the baby wipes dried my hands out. It does work!!

wilma's avatar

@rooeytoo Thanks, I have tried that, it helped a little but not a lot.

autumn43's avatar

@wilma – yup. Only in the winter when the heat comes on in the house and everything is so dry.

I have not looked at any of the other answers, so someone may have said this already. wife and i have dry hands. we use Purell so much to disinfect our hands that they feel like sandpaper. we have tried just about every skin lotion product out there. we have decided for the money, that all Suave products are as good or better than most. the best deals on Suave are at Dollar General Stores.

Trance24's avatar

Go for the hemp lotion not just because of the symbol as @dutchbrossis noted, but because it works amazingly!! Its all natural, comes in small containers for on the go, not too pricey, and has a great but not over powering smell. I love using it, and my hands are silky soft.

@ram201pa and @lunabean I did take your suggestions and purchase Olay Body Quench a few months ago and I LOVE it. You guys were right. It’s perfect for the legs and even the arms! It leaves a long lasting smoothness. Highly recommended. And for anyone who would like to give it a try, I just saw this mail in rebate for a free full size bottle if you are interested (that’s actually what reminded me about this thread).

I haven’t chosen a set hand lotion yet, I do plan to try out some of the suggestions made in this thread, but currently I am using Bath and Body Work’s aromatherapy set (Sleep, Stress Relief and Energy) and I really like that for the hands too. The fragrance isn’t overpowering and it’s a good smell (especially the Sleep bottle).

Once again, thank you to everyone for your suggestions!! I’ll let you know either on this thread or personally once I get around to trying the brand you recommended.
