Can you confirm my clutch problem?

So, a few weeks ago when the snow hit I noticed a whiney sound when engaged in a gear and a few times I would touch gears. About a week ago I found it hard to put it in gears sometimes. Tonight when I got to work I think it finally had enough and started making a horrible sound. The sound of metal rotating is only heard when in gear or clutch is engaged. If the pedal is down and not in any gear it won’t make the sound. If the pedal is down with a gear selected it makes the sound. In neutral with the pedal not depressed it makes sound.

Is this more than just a clutch replacement? Any idea’s on how much this would cost for a ‘96 Golf?
