Why do I over-eat?

Asked by bumface (101points) January 13th, 2010

Ok so I’m a young, pretty decent looking and slim, educated, in a secure job, amazing mates, travelling the world… really everything is peachy.

So why do i over indulge in food? and when i do it its not just something dumb like a slice of pizza, its a whole pizza. followed by a block of chocolate.

i normally eat extremely healthily, but about once a week i get this massive urge to eat a crapload of food and feel as if i have no self control.

can anyone relate, theorise about why i do it, or make suggestions of how to calm my mind and stop this self-destructive behaviour?

Control issue. Filling a void. Tapeworm.

I like to eat because I like to eat. I personally believe in excersize to counteract my terrible habits.

I’m assuming you’re a girl? For me, I mostly over eat when I am bored :/ Yup. Nothing to do? I eat! D: Sad, depressed and lonely? I eat!

What circumstances were you eating in though? Were you bored too? Stressed? Maybe you had gone a long time with out eating and just started stuffing? I also heard it takes the body a few minutes after eating to be told it is is full, by the brain, believe it or not. So maybe you’re eating too fast?

So many possibilities. May I suggest checking out Overeaters Anonymous

It’s a 12 step program for folks with compulsive eating issues. It’s great that it hasn’t affected your health so far, but better to deal with it before it overwhelms your life.

Sometimes people just love food and have a difficult time controlling their urges. I’ve struggled with this my entire life but you just have to take the initiative and be responsible. I think as long as it’s not something you do every day you’ll be okay. Just keep yourself under control.

I eat when I’m bored or stressed, but in your case, at least based on the facts of yourquestion, I see nothing wrong with your splurging once in a while. As long as you enjoy it. And for heaven’s sake, don’t guilt yourself.

If it is disturbing you, and you are afraid it’s the beginning of an eating disorder, seek help, because they can have a serious effect on your health.

It sounds like you are reasonably healthy, though, and if it doesn’t frighten you or upset you, and you feel that your weight and activity are essentially normal, don’t worry about it. Enjoy the pizza, and have fruits and veggies the next day.

Buffets are my undoing.

Well…..maybe your “extremely healthy” eating diet is lacking something your body craves….?

I’d automatically say…Comfort? you feel… empty? as I do this too all the time… well not all the time… but a lot… at least once or twice a week!

I still don’t really get it though…

Apart from the fact that it was my only pleasure as a child… it made me feel good… when everything else around me felt bad I would eat…and it was AMAZING… (pop tarts, fruit corners, salt and vinegar crisps, toast with butter and jam, cup of tea, mini eggs, double decker bars….)

I’m just about to read a book called “Hunger” a philosophical analysis… I’ll update you if I get any insights!

hmm thanks for the responses.

to clarify some things:
i cycle to/from work every day and jog a couple of times a week
im a vegetarian, but get my protein through lentils and beans and dairy, plus take supplements
i tend to overeat when im hungover – hangover cure perhaps? but i think its because i feel like shit so i tend to lose respect for myself so dont take care of myself like usual. i hate how it feels so glutonous and greedy. i honestly feel repulsed by it.
im not really concerned about my health/weight. i also eat when i have nothing to do – so preoccupying myself with productive things is key to avoiding over indulgence. i suppose a big problem is my lack of motivation post-heavy-booze-session to do anything worthwhile!

so a new question: how do i motivate myself on a dreary sunday to get out of the house instead of suffering a hangover and eating junk? – and dont suggest avoidance of saturday nights for that is my much loved vice!

Weird. I do the same thing… and just like you I exercise daily to maintain my athletic/lean figure. After my gorge-a-thon, I normally feel absolutely horrible then I become really strict for about a week; I start feeling great and then BAM! the cycle starts over. I’ve actually calculated the caloric intake… normally I consume 1300 daily, on these splurge days I’ll do 3,000+ calories. I wonder if there is a technical term for our “disorder.”

bumface's avatar

@Georgia_Printco oh gosh thats exactly it! its so annoying because the cycle just repeats itself incessantly. i often wonder why i cant simply just control it on that one critical day, but then if i do the goodness is pent up and i splurge the next day anyway. its absolutely ridiculous!!

because it is so fuckin good! i have the same problem. until i start gaining weight, i can’t bring myself to worry about it. so just enjoy it? lol

@Georgia_Printco ; I think they call it “Binging”!

Georgia_Printco's avatar

I guess so…. I feel like its more a control issue… as long as i maintain a regular schedule it doesn’t happen…. oh, but i agree – the hangover hunger is HORRIBLE!

And you can’t beat Pizza and Chocolate!

if your slim after eating so much and dont gain weight, you either have a tapeworm or a very high metabolism. fuck it eat away theres nothing wrong with it. just be careful by the time you get older your metabolism may slow and you will gain weight, and it will be harder to break away from the habbit of eating so much.

Eat your food slowly. Your brain will tell you when it’s enough. Eat plenty of fibers to fill the stomach.
