Why don't people microwave eggs instead of boiling or frying them?

Asked by dunkin_donutz (441points) January 15th, 2010

It seems like microwaving would be an easier way to go. Is there some reason people don’t microwave eggs more?

Don’t they explode?

janbb's avatar

I’ve heard that too.

mowens's avatar

I never tried. But if they explode this is something I shall do nightly.

Snarp's avatar

Eggs do explode in the microwave. Apparently they can be cooked outside the shell in the microwave, but it can still be messy. Seems to me that in that case a skillet is so fast and easy that it beats making a mess of your microwave.

oratio's avatar

I tried it once and it exploded. It might help if you crack it and put it in a bow of water.

You can make scrambled eggs in a microwave, but they don’t taste that great (imho).

mowens's avatar

You don’t like the metallic taste of nuclear scrambled eggs? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

trailsillustrated's avatar

they get all rubbery

You can poach an egg in the microwave, and it works pretty well. But it’s really not any easier than just poaching the regular way so…why bother.

My guess, as to why they don’t taste as good in a microwave, would be that eggs are a liquid protein. Microwaves wiggle atoms around and water atoms are the microwave’s favorite. So you get a lot of molecule movement and it destroys certain protein chains- leaving you with a rubbery mess of a once-proud egg.

I’m with @phoenyx. My mom used to microwave scrambled eggs for me all the time and, frankly, they just don’t taste as good as when they’ve been scrambled in a pan.

hug_of_war's avatar

Seriously eggs are super easy to make, I prefer using the pan and actually really enjoying them to microwaving.

Austinlad's avatar

You CAN microwave them—I made a cheese casserole that’s great—but you HAVE to break up the yoke and cover the container with wax paper. Otherwise, you’ll find exploded yoke all over your microwaven oven, and it’s darned hard to clean.

On a side note, I burnt the fuck out of my hand the other day while making Sunny side up eggs. And a friend of mine, who is 25, has never seen sunny side up eggs. Ever. I had to google a picture, and show him. He said he would never eat them because he would get sominela. (sp?) How retarded is that?

CMaz's avatar

It works ok. And you will not get a “Wet” yoke.
But, you have to take it out of the shell.
Put pat of butter in custard dish add egg.
Microwave for 30 seconds. It still might pop but that is the closest you will get.

I do it now and then just to be lazy. A couple of slices of buttered toast and all is tolerable.
:-)

too hard to make eggies in a basket in the microwave…i love them….mmmmmm

You can buy a microwave egg poacher at Walmart. I don’t know that they would taste too great.

Try this instead: Baked eggs.

Use a custard dish, lightly buttered, and crack the egg into it, keeping the yolk whole if you can.

Place the custard dish in a pan of boiling water (make sure the water rises to nearly the same height as the egg in the dish—but the water doesn’t spill into the dish or touch the egg)

Bake at 250° to 300° for whatever time it takes until the egg whites get firm. (It’s been so long since I’ve had these that I forget how long it takes.)

When the eggs are done, handle the custard dish with a potholder while you chop the egg inside and melt some butter over it, crumble some bacon on it, salt and pepper, etc.

Heaven in a dish.

I found this on the net which is how I would expect to do it.

Hard Boiled Eggs

* Fill the microwave cooking dish with water enough to cover eggs, for a minimum 1 inch of water.
* However, let just the water be in the dish and do not put the eggs just as yet.
* Add a spoon of vinegar and salt to the water, which will prevent the eggs from cracking. It will also make the job of peeling them more easier.
* Now put this container (without the eggs of course)in the microwave and heat it till the water boils.
* Get the container out with the boiling water and place the eggs in the water carefully and cover the container.
* Covering the container will prevent in a mess in case the eggs explode and will retain the heat inside. This is important thing to remember while you are cooking eggs in a microwave.
* Cook the egg for around 8 minutes on low or medium heat again in the microwave oven.
* Take the container out and let the eggs stay in the hot water for almost the same time – 8 minutes. But this can vary based on how much ‘done’ should the eggs be.
* Let the eggs cool down and then attack!

Buyer beware!!

I scramble eggs all the time in the MW, since I am a really lazy cook.

Crack two eggs into MWable bowl. Beat with fork until yokes and whites are mixed. Add c. 1 T water, several T. of cottage cheese, or add undiluted salsa. MW 1 minute.
Push solids to center of bowl.
MW another minute or so.
Let rest for a bit. Sprinkle fresh dill on top.

Snarp's avatar

@Cruiser Which is why people don’t microwave eggs. Sounds like a pot of water on the stove is a lot easier.

ragingloli's avatar

Because they explode.

jaytkay's avatar

@knitfroggy You can buy a microwave egg poacher at Walmart. I don’t know that they would taste too great.

I have one of those. The eggs are OK, not quite as good as from the stovetop. But I have a hard time poaching in a pan, the eggs always diffuse into a messy web, so I use the microwave.

Every now and then I’ll make an egg sandwich using an egg I’ve cooked in the microwave. This is mainly a holdover from when I was a kid because the way I was taught to do it, you end up with a McDonald’s-like egg disc and it reminded me of Egg McMuffins. It’s always tasted pretty good to me, not much different from doing it on the stove.

You have to butter the bowl, break up the yolk, and cover the bowl with a paper towel while cooking. Takes like 2 minutes, easy peasy.

@Snarp Some people just like a challenge! 2 summers ago I hard cooked an egg with a home made solar oven I made out of a cardboard box and tin foil just because I wanted to see if I could. It took 20 minutes too almost faster than boiling water and let it sit etc. It was pretty cool to be able to do on my deck!!

J0E's avatar

I do it pretty much every morning, it works great. I crack an egg into a bowl and whisk it up, then I put a paper towel over it and put it in the microwave. It makes a perfect disc when it’s done, perfect to put between toast with a slice of cheese.

Snarp's avatar

@Cruiser I like the challenge of a solar cooker, but the challenge of a microwave?

Cruiser's avatar

@Snarp I didn’t ask the question I just answered it. I don’t use the microwave for anything other than heating water or popcorn or peeps for laughs.

@Snarp That made me laugh…Of course with tooth pick swords! lol!

You can “poach” an egg in the microwave but it’s not really like a poached egg. You have to prick the yolk with a pin first other wise it will burst.

You can also do scrambled eggs in the microwave too, you whisk the egg in a very large bowl (it will expand a LOT), add a bit of butter and microwave it for about a minute, then mix it up with a fork and if it’s still a bit runny, do it for a little longer.

Neither of these are as good as eggs cooked the proper way.

If you try to microwave a whole egg in the shell you’ll have scrambled egg plastered all over the inside of your oven.
