What movies would have been better with alternative actors in the lead role?

Asked by ucme (50047points) January 15th, 2010

Actors turn down roles for a variety of reasons. Often iconic lead roles are not the directors prefered choice. Yet most of the actors who play these parts are so renowned for doing so we can’t see anyone else but them playing the role. However just for fun, what movies that you enjoy do you believe would be better served if you could change the actors involved & who would be their replacements? Eg. Would Paul Newman & Steve Mcqueen in say Cool Hand Luke/The Great Escape, have suited each others roles just as well?

Anything with J-Lo in, apart from money train when she wasn’t so up herself.

ghost rider would have been better with young klent eastwood as the lead role – young klent eastwood wouldve been a cool wolverine

Batman has always seemed miscast. Maybe a younger Liam Neesan?

i think michael ketin was the best bruce wayne but christin bail was a better batman – but its hard to cast that role – i just wish they would let frank miller write the screenplay or direct a batmona movie sometime

Any of Nicholas Cages movies he has made in the last 10 years. His last ok role was face off. Since then I can’t stand his acting anymore or his movies. Ghost rider could have been an OK movie had anybody but Nic been the lead character. Heath Ledger, even Johnny Depp he was so bad he gave bad acting a bad name!

Casablanca would have been much better with Pee Wee Herman in the Bogart role, and Alicia Silverstone instead of Ingrid Bergman.

“Away We Go”. John Krasinski’s and Maya Rudolph’s other, more established personas were too distracting.

I think Jeruba should have played the Cate Blanchett role in Elizabeth: the Golden Age.

Any movie that had an older villain and didn’t cast Rutger Hauer made a mistake.

@pdworkin Possibly, however the wee man would have enhanced The African Queen with more panache. Given his penchant for tragic comedy. If only for the look of awe on Katherine Hepburn’s face. His oscar would have been assured.

@Austinlad Agree Monroe was overrated.Mansfield would certainly have liked it hot!

The DaVivci Code and Angels and Demons. I could never see Tom Hanks as Professor Robert Langdon.

@kruger_d He was good in darkman so yeah why not?

Tom Cruise in Interview With A Vampire. I hate Tom Cruise. And he tried to suck out all of the homoeroticism out of the story.

ucme's avatar

@tinyfaery He was better in Interview with Oprah, subtitled Jumpin Jack Flash. Have to say he was hilarious in Tropic Thunder though.

Burt Reynolds as Han Solo.
Dom DeLuise as Chewbacca would have made it even more epic.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

Star Wars Episode X: The Cannonball Run? :-)

Zen_Again's avatar

@mrentropy And he wouldn’t have needed make-up/costume.

@Zen_Again I’ll say this only once more because it’s getting tiresome now. Will you please stay clear of my threads. I have no wish to converse with you. You really are quite irritating now. Thank you for your cooperation. What’s that, you can interact with people within the thread it’s none of my business. Funny that’s what I was about to say. Practice what you preach. It’s always a good idea.Sigh, & the thread was so upbeat up until this juncture. Thankfully only a brief interruption. Now, where were we.

Any Spiderman movie not starring Bruce Campbell as Spiderman (i.e. ALL Spiderman movies!).

The Happening with Marky Mark. He just ruined that movie.

Melanie Griffith instead of Kim Bassinger in Cool World.
Salma Hayek instead of Penelope Cruz in Blow
Benicio Del Toro instead of Antonio Banderas in Interview With a Vampire
John Malkovich instead of Tom Cruise in Interview With a Vampire
Jonathan Rhys Meyers instead of Brad Pitt in Interview With a Vampire

In case anyone thinks I was being facetious, IMDB says that Burt Reynolds turned down the role of Han Solo.

Okay, maybe I was being a little bit facetious but no entirely so.

filmfann's avatar

The Bogart and Bergman characters in Casablanca were originally supposed to be Ronald Reagan and Ann Sheridan. Ugh!

nayeight's avatar

@filmfann Yea, Marky Mark as a science teacher is not even halfway believable. And he didn’t even take his shirt off. FAIL.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence Anyone instead of Tom Cruise in Interview With a Vampire…

Sylvester Stallone was originally considered for Travolta’s role in Saturday Night Fever. Ironically Travolta was considered for Rambo along with others including, Eastwood, De niro, Pacino & Newman. Fascinating to imagine how those movies would have looked if things had been different.Somehow can’t see Stallone strutting his stuff at the disco. Would have been hilarious to see Rambo bearing down on an incredulous foe to the sounds of Staying Alive, “well you can tell by the way I use my walk i’m a woman’s man.” “Yo Adrian”

kruger_d's avatar

I think Thomas Jayne could probably pull off Batman.

dindinbaby's avatar

If you want to see Sly strutting his stuff, look up the terrible movie, “Rhinestone”. Sly Stallone and Dolly Parton singing duets. Enough said.
