What about the Dominican Republic?

Asked by Ghost_in_the_system (2035points) January 16th, 2010

The Dominican Republic shares the island with Haiti. After this recent earthquake, all of the news coverage of the problems in Haiti has been extensive but I haven’t even heard the name Dominican Republic. Have you heard of their status or seen anything coming from that country? Are they suffering as bad as Haiti or was the quake centered in a location that minimized the impact to the whole island?

They weren’t nearly as badly hit, if at all. The earthquake seemed to center very near the capital of Haiti, and gets less bad as you get further away into the suburbs and countryside.

According to NPR yesterday, some Haitians are even braving the distance and bad roads to get to the Dominican Republic for health care, but not too many have the wherewithal to make it.

The Dominican Republic was the first country to send aid to Haiti.

I understand that the epicenter was also shallow, which would limit the area involved.

Tourist business as usual for the east end of the island. Not sure about the west-central part of the island or the shared border, but a concern is the people of Haiti moving east into the Dominican Republic, straining their national resources, and causing civil unrest.

Apparently Puerto Rico does not share the same fault line as Haiti and there have been mild tremors there as well.

Earthquake activity in the Caribbean is not unusual.

The aid groups are using the D.R’s airports to get relief supplies on to the island. Then the materiel is being taken by ship to Port au Prince. The D.R. was left relatively unscathed and has better airports and so on than Haiti even before the quake.

D. R. is also much better equipped to take care of itself than Haiti is.

Dom Rep hardly felt the quake. Dom Rep is taking in people who need health care at the border, but turning away people who are ok.

Clinics do offer treatment.
