Do you ever find yourself wondering if the stranger you just encountered is a fellow Flutherer?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) January 16th, 2010

Living in a city for the first time, I encounter many more people on a daily basis than I am used to. I often find myself wondering if anyone I see is someone who is on Fluther. Do this happen to anyone else?

Sure does. Some people just look like it, ya know? :)

Jeruba's avatar

Not that, but I do sometimes wonder if someone I’ve encountered on fluther is someone I know elsewhere. It has happened a time or two.

Nullo's avatar

I figure that there are so many people in the world and so few people on Fluther, that the odds of meeting a Flutherer in Real Life are nil.

SamIAm's avatar

@Jeruba : one of my little sister’s friends is on here… i thought that was so strange as soon as i recognized it! small world sometimes

ETpro's avatar

Not yet, but I’m sure the time will come. I may ask outright, if I think it’;s someone I’ve enjoyed talking with. One thing I love about Fluther as opposed to some other Social Q&A sites is there really aren’t any people I’ve met here I would be afraid to met in real life.

willbrawn's avatar

Not yet. I’ve only seen like 5 people from Denver. But if anyone wants to get lunch I’m down. Kinda cool meeting people from fluther.

ETpro's avatar

@willbrawn I don’t know any fellow Bostonians yet. Maybe there are some. But I’d feel the same. Meeting for lunch would be cool.

rangerr's avatar

I have.
I found out one of the jellies lives in my town, so whenever I’m out I think of her and try to guess if anyone around me could be her.

arnbev959's avatar

It has happened.

Like rangerr, I know that a particular Flutherite lives nearby. So whenever I’m out riding my bike I keep on the lookout. (I know what he looks like though, so if I saw him there would be no wondering.)

daemonelson's avatar

I wear my jelly shirt out a lot. So if I hear someone point and exclaim, I know they’re a fellow jelly.

breedmitch's avatar

@Pete: Hmm. We never did figure that one out.

ETpro's avatar

@daemonelson Has it ever happened? And how do you get a Jelly Shirt?

Spinel's avatar

@ETpro Jelly shirts are sold here.

YARNLADY's avatar

Not yet, but I expect it to happen any day now.

Steve_A's avatar

Nope never have really till know :)

just curious anyone live in Tampa, Florida?

mrentropy's avatar

We need Jellybuttons.

sweetteaindahouse's avatar

I helped set two of my friends with accounts, so I know people. We are the most technical people in a school full of rednecks.

nebule's avatar

I do often think about it yes but I don’t think there is anyone even here from my county (Lancashire, UK) let alone town…so it’s highly unlikely…

janbb's avatar

@lynneblundell I’ll be in L’pool next month. It would be great to meet, but I’m not sure I’‘ll have time. (Family reunion and my nother-in-law is ill.)

janbb's avatar

I never expect that anyone I meet will be a Jelly since everyone I talk to about Fluther has never heard of it.

Trillian's avatar

Me too @janbb . I don’t know yet if I want Fluther in my “outside of the computer time” life. That might be a George Costanza problem, with worlds colliding!

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

I might if I lived in California, as that seems to be where a significant amount of jellies are from. I know of several jellies from my state, and one who used to live in my hometown, but not anymore. But, I’d love to run into someone with a jellyshirt one day.

Arisztid's avatar

I have wondered that a few times about people of various sites.

I figure that, if they know me, they probably would recognize the description of me. There are just not that many tall Rromani Gypsies with ass long hair and light eyes, especially in America. So, anyone who knows me from those sites would pick it up and this has not happened yet.

Holden_Caulfield's avatar

Not necessarily from a look, but rather from their Questions and Responses. Having known a person, one can see certain themes and patterns in both. So yes, I do wonder… often, though Fluther is available to milliions. But there are certain characteristics of individuals that are diffferent than everyone else, and thus, having known them, it makes me wonder if it is “them”

dutchbrossis's avatar

Yes I do. I work in a casino, and I wonder that about people I meet sometimes.

avvooooooo's avatar

We need like secret club rings or something… ;)

ChocolateReigns's avatar

We need a way to make ourselves obvious to fellow flutherites but not get looked at strange (sometimes this matters…). Like a ring or something.

rangerr's avatar

Rings would just make everyone start staring at people’s hands.

ChocolateReigns's avatar

@rangerr ya that would be the problem….maybe we’ll have something in the future that would make this easier.

nebule's avatar

I’d buy a Fluther ring… a pendant might be better though… just a suggestion….

rangerr's avatar

I’d totally wear a Dr. J necklace.

Ron_C's avatar

No, actually, I wonder if a fellow “Flutherer” is someone I have already met on AnswerBag. There seem to be a lot of us here.

TheLoneMonk's avatar

My sister-in-law Sueanne_Tremendous met someone from Fluther about a year ago by happenstance. She was at a hotel computer and she logged on to Fluther and someone walking by noticed and introduced themselves by their screen name. Sue didn’t know the person by the screen name so she looked it up while he was standing there and sure enough he was a fellow Flutherer. I don’t recall the persons name, if I evee knew it. I’ll have her log on and tell the story if I can get a hold of her.

I know there are some Milwaukee people here and I do wonder from time to time if I’ve ever enountered a flutherer.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

I have never wondered this – it wouldn’t really be all that extraordinary.

Cruiser's avatar

Yes…that is why I now wear a disguise.

jonsblond's avatar

@Cruiser So it was you I saw strolling down the street the other day.

Cruiser's avatar

Nope…sorry…. that was another Fluther dressed up as Fog Horn Leg Horn!

Trillian's avatar

Fortunately, ah keep mah feathus numbuhed for just such an emergency.

Cruiser's avatar

@Trillian ahhhh say looky here! There are mo-ah of us thain you can shake a dad-burn stick at!

Axemusica's avatar

I never really thought about it, but I’d imagine meeting a Jelly would be a very unique experience. Just about everyone on the site is an intellectual and I like conversations that could go on for long ends of the night around a cup of coffee.

I almost got to meet a special Jelly, but I’m now moving further from them. :(

mrentropy's avatar

I’d be up for meeting other Jellies.

janbb's avatar

I think YARNLADY is organizing a get together for Jellies in the SF area some time this year.

daemonelson's avatar

@ETpro Nope, it hasn’t happened yet. And @Spinel put the link.

SamIAm's avatar

@janbb : really? that’s pretty cool… I didn’t know she was here! yay.

rangerr's avatar

Everyone is in SF… :( I wanna go

SamIAm's avatar

@rangerr : comeee! when i joined fluther i lived in ny, this city is awesome!

rangerr's avatar

@Samantha_Rae Let me just get on that plane….

deni's avatar

I was biking somewhere the other day and thinking about this….don’t know why but it’s an interesting and fun thought to entertain. i hope i run into someone someday! though i would probably never know it, and my appearance without a mustache may throw people off…

if anyone else lives in boulder, WAVE IF YOU SEE ME!!!!!!!!!
