How do you think Ricky Gervais handled the Golden Globes presentation?

Asked by mammal (9431points) January 18th, 2010

one gag i thought amusing :

‘It is an honour to be here in a room full of what I consider to be the most important people on the planet: actors. ‘They’re just better than ordinary people, aren’t they?

He said: ‘Actors aren’t just loved here in Hollywood, they’re loved the world over because they’re recognisable. You can be in the Third World and you get a glimpse of a Hollywood star and it makes you feel better.

‘You can be a little child, a little Asian child, with no possessions, no money – but you see a picture of Angelina Jolie and you think, ‘Mummy!’

Meh – I wasn’t very impressed.

I thought he was brilliant, but then I usually think he’s brilliant. His chiding was all in fun, including his jabs about Mel Gibson’s drinking and McCartney’s divorce. The only comment I found mean-spirited was Tom Hank’s comment about Alec Baldwin.

I won’t watch ridiculous awards shows until they start showing the Nobel Prize awards on prime time TV. So, I can answer the question by saying I’m ambivalent. Also, who is Ricky Gervais and why should I care what he thinks (in so far as I don’t care about any celebrity’s opinion)?

I thought he was pretty good. Some of his gags were a bit dry but delivered with his usual style. Pity the UK didnt do better in the awards though. We got a few nominations I guess. that’s something.
Ricky Gervais – You either “get” him or not really. (a bit like Eddie Izzard.)

@shilolo me neither, unless the celebrities are getting a roasting :)

I am a fan of Ricky Gervais. He is the only reason why I watched the awards last night. I recorded it on the DVR so I could skip past all the boring speeches.

@shilolo thanks for your insights.~

I wasn’t able to watch the show, but as a comedian, Gervais blows away most of the people they get to host these things, except maybe Conan (or they’re on the same level). He’s very good with dry, subtle humor and has an infectious laugh.

I was a little disappointed. I think he is screamingly funny normally, but I thought he was a little reined in.

I don’t think some people knew he was being sarcastic – and drippingly so. I LOVED it! Some of these people (actors) need a reality check and his subtle way of infusing this into his jokes is SO amusing! I saw some of them squirm a little in their Vera Wang gowns. or maybe they were just adjusting their thongs.

@eponymoushipster Yeah, it’s big news when a comedian makes some jokes about actors. Woopdeefrickingdoo….. Meanwhile, off in Haiti, you know they loved his bit about Angelina Jolie. I mean, the videos they showed of the simple Haitians rolling on the floor laughing were awesome. ~

His name reminds me of General Grievous.

The Nobel Prize awards would be a pretty ridiculous award show to televise. “Here is Hans Vaan Der Gleck doing a song about his mitochondrial DNA research!” In primetime, no less. ~

I had forgotten that Gervais was hosting. And that the Globes were last night. Pity.

Honestly, though I think awards shows are on their way out. The ratings have been increasingly abysmal. One more shared cultural referent on its way for revision.

@shilolo well, why don’t we all sit around and mope? I notice you’re on here, finding fault. Why haven’t you flown to Port-au-Prince and applied your medical training to assisting some victims? Or have you and you’re the one guy with WiFi access?

shilolo's avatar

Yes, @andrew, no offense, but whether Lost wins another award doesn’t matter, and won’t ever matter, but the discovery of the cause of peptic ulcers or HIV surely does.

@eponymoushipster Your response is pathetic. You have no idea about what I’m doing, so your vague attempt at an insult fails. Organizing surgeons to travel to Haiti to work with specific groups (like Partners in Health and Americares) doesn’t sound like much, but it’s the least I can do. What, precisely, are YOU doing?

I think he did a good job, but I’m a Ricky fan.

Also why the hell did Haiti get dragged into a topic about someone hosting an awards show?

The Jolie/Mummy joke was the best imo. I too am a Ricky fan and so I enjoyed his little parts, but I can see why others might not find him funny.

I missed Tom Hank’s Baldwin joke. What was it?

Dr_C's avatar

I liked the part where he said “I like a drink as much as the next guy… especially since the next guy is Mel Gibson”

Gold.

is there a youtube video of the hanks/baldwin thing? i wonder if it’s an “in-joke”; they’re both known for the number of times they’ve hosted SNL. perhaps it was something to do with that?

@Dr_C agreed. gold.

Well say what you want about Ricky Gervais but last night’s Golden Globes had a ratings bump over last year. Ratings were up 17% from last year. Good job Ricky!

More so than how he handled it is how the celebrities have handled him all day. He’s a comedian, maybe the best living, and the throngs of self-important assholes in the audience showed how little sense of humor they actually have. He roasted them with sharp wit, as usual, and they sat stone faced unable to laugh at themselves.
Tom Hanks’ sour face and just plain cruel remark towards Gervais proved two things about comedy that I’ve always thought to be true.
1. Gervais is brilliant.
2. Tom Hanks is not now nor has he ever been funny.
Fuck Hollywood if they can’t collectively take a joke. (or fifty)
