Ted Kennedy held to his senate seat for 46 years before his death does that mean for lack of better words,he ran unopposed ?

My question is; with politicians like him that have held their seats for decades,is there a point where the opposing party gives up in believing they have a chance of dethroning a long standing politician and they just use the election as a platform for the challenging politician to get some exposure for future endeavors .

No, it doesn’t mean he was unopposed. It means he actually listened to his constituents and acted accordingly and earned the respect of his state and of his country. Something his newly-elected Republican replacement would do well to remember.

Unopposed means that there was no one running against him. It does not mean that the candidate running against him didn’t stand a chance in hell.
