How do you reference other people's comments in your own?

Asked by simplyasking (52points) January 21st, 2010

Sorry for such a noobish question. I’m just wondering how you do that thing (@soandso) that links back to their comment. Is there a certain kind of html code for that? Thanks!

Hi, @simplyasking, and welcome to fluther.

Type the @ character. When you do, you should see a list of names appear. You click the one you want, and it pops in, link and all. Try it. (This works only if you are addressing someone who’s already in the thread.)

If the thread is very long, not all the names may show, but you can type the first character and you’ll get a short list.

Once in a while this does not work at all. Then you can just copy and paste the name.

@jeruba when posting on my I pod touch it hardly ever works !! It’ll probably work this time just out of spite !!

@Sandydog It is case-sensitive. So, @jeruba won’t work, but @Jeruba will. :)

Ok lets try this @Jeruba
another thing I find with the touch is that any red links dont work. I also dont get any list of names appearing after the @

@Jeruba Thank you kindly :)

It is good form to do so and it gives credit to what others have said. It clarifies to what you are referring.
