Is the air ticket more expensive when you purchase it on Friday?

Asked by bianlink (164points) January 22nd, 2010

I’m trying to buy an air ticket for one month later. When I checked the price yesterday, it was about $150. Today it becomes $250. Is it because it’s Friday or the price just goes up? Thanks.

I have read that batches of cheap tickets are released on Tuesdays or Wednesdays but I don’t have a verifiable source for that. I have noticed mainly random fluctuations of pricing. Most of the discount sites have a “farewatcher” feature that will notify you when the price drops.

It is when you buy it on a Friday for a flight out that day.

Book far enough in advance and there is no big difference if any at all. The closer to that flight date the higher the price will get for any day.

I have been told the Tuesday rule also by travel agents in the past. By any chance did your search change from 4 week advance to 3 week and 6 days? Many tickets are priced one week in advance, two weeks, etc.

Also, flying on Friday is usually a very expensive day. Tuesday and Wednesday are the least expensive.

Also, there are a certain number of tickets at various price points, so they might have just sold out of the price you saw the day before.

I’m booking for a ticket in March. The travel day is not Friday. It seems like the price of the air ticket is going up.

Could be. Maybe the flights are selling out for the dates you want? March is a popular month to fly. Spring Break.

I read the same thing on the internet, that tickets purchased Tuesday and Wednesday are the cheapest. In doing my own shopping over the years, I have found this to be true.

It may change, as more people find out about it and start booking on those days. :)

I have found cheap tickets midweek around 7— 8 pm (especially in the summer) and early in the morning (2 – 3 am.

Recently I found even cheaper airfare than when I initially decided to buy. I wrote the flight info then logged on the actual airline’s website and got the same trip for $35 less. That is very unusual though. Come to think of it, this happened a few days ago (Wednesday) at around 9am.

I will definitely pay closer attention now to the day of the week… thanks :)

Only 10% of a flight’s seats are available at the cheapest rates, and for each flight there are usually around 8 price points. Prices can change up to three times a day during the week, and usually once a day on weekends.

Supposedly it’s cheaper to fly on Saturday than during the week or on Sundays, when business travel occurs. If you’re flying during spring break weeks to a spring break destination, you will pay holiday rates, the same as flying at Christmas, Thanksgiving or Easter.

If you buy far enough in advance, Friday is just as good as any other day. The closer you get to the flight date, the harder it gets to find bargains. Call the airline and ask them for their discount policy.

It usually is for me. Usually Tuesdays/Wednesdays are the cheapest for me.
