What does it take to get a full ride scholarship to Law School?

Asked by freckles (363points) January 23rd, 2010

I am a sophomore in college, and I want to start thinking about doing everything I can now to try and get a full-ride scholarship into law school. Hopefully it is not to late to start doing the things I need to in college. Right now my cumulative GPA is 3.16, I hoooope I can bring that up over the next two and a half years.

Other than getting a good GPA and good LSAT scores, what else would it take to get a full ride scholarship? Also, what exact numbers on GPA and LSAT would it take? 3.5, 4.0, 180?

Thanks for your help.

Have you ever heard of the saying, “its not what you know, but who you know?”. this saying is sometimes true. here is an example: each term of office, politicians and judges are given and x number of dollars to distribute to whomever they please. this is scholarship money. if you know a judge or politician, ask them if they have any unpromised scholarship money remaining. you might be pleasantly surprised.

It’s my understanding, and I may be wrong on this, that most scholarship money for law school would be based on financial need. Most people take out loans to go to law school, unlike other graduate school programs like the sciences where you can get stipends and research assistantships.

Superb grades and extreme financial need…those or a family trust fund.

@stranger_in_a_strange_land Do you know what exactly constitutes superb grades. I am getting pretty good grades right now but I have no idea if it’s enough. p.s. I love your name.

Talk to several financial aid workers, at the college and your high school. That rype of grant would be very difficult to find, and even more difficult to qualify for. I wish you the best of luck.

P.S. There is a scholarship being offered on another Q & A site right now. You could try there.

You can generally get a decent law school scholarship by getting a high LSAT score, and applying to lower tier law schools. That works if you know where you want to practice, and attend a regional law school.
