My iPhone was returned anonymously to me yesterday. How can I find/reward the person?

Asked by Owl (726points) January 24th, 2010

I lost my phone yesterday in a parking lot, and the young man who found it after I had gone called three people in my contacts list to track me down. He then went to the trouble of driving to a bookstore and leaving it there, anonymously, for my friend, who is returning it to me tomorrow. The finder would only say on the phone that he was a college student and wished he could afford such a nice phone. He wouldn’t give his name or number to my friend. It’s probably a hopeless cause finding this honest young man, but I so much want to thank and reward him. Any ideas I’m overlooking?

Did you check the history and see if he logged into facebook or anything personal via safari? That’s the only way I can think of.

It seems he doesn’t want to be found or offered a reward. How refreshing to find such a nice person.

I do not know the answer to your question but your story made my day!

You are going to need some blood hounds. I hope you can find him. He deserves a medal.

You can reward that person by anonymously returning someone else’s iPhone (or whatever else you find).

I don’t know, but I think I love this mystery person :) I’m with @frdelrosario pay it forward remember this and do something completely unselfish and kind for someone else.

He went to a lot of trouble to avoid being found while helping you out. He had his reasons, perhaps some sense of debt or obligation all his own, perhaps some fear of being known. No matter how kind your intentions may be, I would suggest respecting that.

Just pay it forward, man.

@Seek_Kolinahr @sjmc1989 All I can think about now is that the kid dies in the end. Hooray cynicism.

@Shield_of_Achilles

But he did change the world. He wins. ^_^

Good question and answers, Owl.

About the kid dying, too, that wasn’t even a bad stab wound. There are no vital organs down there. It kind of ruined the movie for me, but that’s just how I am, I guess.

Shield_of_Achilles's avatar

@dverhey Just putting this out there. Being stabbed isn’t fun

@Shield_of_Achilles It’s Hollywood, man, but I agree. Not that I would really know, though.

Thanks for completely ruining the movie for me guys!

edit: Only kidding I saw it years ago. He did indeed died, but he touched many people’s life so like @Seek_Kolinahr said he wins!

@dverhey Great point about the lack of vital organs in that area! Things like that in movies drive me crazy, and then I drive my husband crazy by pointing them out.

I totally agree with @Jeruba about respecting the young man’s wishes and letting him remain anonymous. Hearing things like this always makes my day, and I’m sure karma will pay him back in kind. You will always remember how his actions impressed you and then take the time to be that same kind of person. What an awesome story.

Check the phone for fingerprints.

I have an idea. Call the friend the friend that’s picking up the phone tomorrow and have them leave something at the bookstore for the guy who found your phone. Have them leave the something (it could be money, a gift card for the bookstore, or, if you have alot of money, you could even give him a gift card for Apple so that he could get a iPhone!) with a clerk (who will probably be guarding your phone till they get there) to give it to the person who brought the phone in. They should have his name in their computers and they should be able to put some kind of note on it.
That’s my only idea, but it seems pretty possible and doable.
Now I have faith in humanity again (after spending time on Youtube, Y!A, and facebook groups, I had totally lost it). Thank you for sharing your story.

I have the feeling that there was a chance that he may have stole the phone and had enough good heart to return it.

You could put up some fliers in the parking lot where he found your phone – if he was there once, he may be a regular. Just post a note that says “thank you”. You could do the same at the bookstore.

Give that phone to me…i’ll gift it to that young guy :P

Depends on how badly you want to work to find them? How many colleges are in your area? if only one, you could post fliers around campus explaining what happened and now you want to find them.
