What influences your fashion,style?

Asked by ShoulderPadQueen (308points) January 24th, 2010

what would say influences your fashion? would it be friends or maybe the area you live. it could also be a celeb or a certain era. i think my style is influenced mostly by the 40’s and 80’s with there emphasis on strong shoulders. there are many different styles and influences so i was just curious.

Comfort. Period.

Convenience and comfort.
edit: and simplicity. All of my shirts are single color, without a pattern.

In order:
• Comfort
• Cost
• Color
• Calories (as in, “Does this outfit make me look like I eat less calories than I do?”)

@jmah hey thats my answer! lol

One word: Comfort

If I’m going out and want to look nice I’ll wear a loose fitting spaghetti strap dress. You will usually catch me wearing a sweatshirt and jeans in the winter and a tank top and shorts in the summer as casual wear. Life is too short to wear constricting clothes just to impress people that don’t really care what you are wearing.

@ShoulderPadQueen perhaps, we could swap. I’ve got a lovely gold lame jacket with shoulder pads.

Comfort, mostly. Beyond that, I can’t really describe why it is I like the clothes I do.

I’m 5’2. If it fits my heighth, I buy it.

I consider myself a fairly formal dresser for my age (15), but I am 6’2”, 140 pounds and have a lot of difficulty finding pants that fit. They just don’t make nice jeans in 30 by 34.

Actually, the Greek Goddesses—HUGE influence. (nakey).

@jewel that seems to be a popular and great choice, ;)

Jude's avatar

@ShoulderPadQueen it’s a deal. ;-)

ShoulderPadQueen's avatar

@jmah dang im gonna hate to see it go hehehe!

jlm11f's avatar

@chyna I am 5’2” too, but I don’t normally have trouble finding stuff for my height. Where are you shopping?

chyna's avatar

@PnL I have just recently discovered Ann Taylor Loft. The usual department stores have a limited amount of petite clothes such as JC Penneys. Where are you shopping?

faye's avatar

Value Village

jlm11f's avatar

@chyna Everywhere and anywhere, really. Department stores that I like include Macys and Dillards. Then there’s always H&M, Express, Buckle, New York and company, Ann Taylor (when they have a proper deal) and other similar stores.

gailcalled's avatar

@PnL @chyna: You both are only 5’ 2”? You write like you are 5’ 7”.

chyna's avatar

@PnL Thanks, I will start checking out these stores. I am not much of a shopper and really have no idea who has my size.

@gailcalled Thank you! I wish I was 5’7”!

I used to be just comfort but now im older and I go with my own style but it resembles the whole converse, skinny/fitted jeans, fitted shirts look. Im inspired by Mark Indelicato though ;]

I’m sort of stuck in the 90’s. I like monochrome, still love black, basically a very classic style that doesn’t really go out of style, but I am not necessarily up with the trends.

I do wear jeans and t-shirts a lot, but I find myself feeling like I should be pulling myself together a little better.

I HATE all of these tops and dresses with the waist at the middle of the rib cage. Empire waist is bad enough, but this is really nowhere. I wonder when I will be able to buy a dress again with the waist at the waist? It is very convenient for manufacturers, because no matter how long or short waisted you are it’s going to fit, because there is not exact place really that it needs to hit.

For all of you 5’2” people, Bloomingdale’s usually has a great Petites department if you have a store near you.

im a spanish man and my skin color has alot to do with my sense of fashon, my year round tan looks good in, red, green, royal blue, and other colors i can’t remember right now. my mood plays a big factor also, if im feeling down i tend to wear darker colors. the most important part of any man’s outfit starts with his shoes. now if your the kind of guy that doesnt care about fashon or looking your best from time to time thats cool, but i personally have to look good because of my line work and im so used to it even when im not working my casual atire can be alittle flashy also, but for me, when i shop i start with the feet first, then work my way up.

For my everyday clothes comfort, color and familiarity are key. I’ve always been very casual and low maintenance, but I like to play with some new styles. My typical outfit is jeans, a t-shirt or stylish top (depending upon the occasion), and a pair of converse or boots. The style may change, but the basics never do.

For work I go with with professional but fun. I have 5 pair of slacks and different pullovers, button downs and sweaters.

Color is something I really focus on. I look great in autumnal and dark colors.

killerkadoogen's avatar

Mr. rogers… button down and zip up sweaters, jeans or dickies. almost always comfortable shoes usually slip on.

This thread has gotten my brain whirring, mainly because I honestly can’t say what it is I like about the clothes I wear. I have to say that I have a weird body type, so many styles and clothing types don’t work on me, but I definitely admire certain styles in other people when they’re pulled off well. I think I go by what’s comfortable, appealing, and what works for me (which ends up being a lot of tomboyish stuff, I’m afraid). I wish I could pull off a lot of styles.

shego's avatar

My style is unique to me. I sometimes make my own clothes and shop at goodwill. I find something I like I buy it, at that’s my style. Screw the “media fashion”

pearls's avatar

I don’t try keeping up with the styles. Besides my bank account would not allow me to change styles every season. I go with comfort.

SABOTEUR's avatar

I become motivated when I get tired of rotating the same 4 shirts and pants.

Then I begrudgingly trod to K-mart to pick up one or two items to add to rotation.

@MissAnthrope great avatar. ;-)

@jmah – Thanks! I love that painting.

Jude's avatar

@MissAnthrope have you seen Antonia’s Line? Great flick. When I saw your avatar, it made me think of the movie.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@jmah – I thought I had, but looking at IMDB, I don’t think so. It looks good – gonna check it out, thanks!
