How to write an APA Psychology paper?

Asked by VanCityKid (579points) January 25th, 2010

I know the format and the 4 main parts (title, summary, main, references) of the APA structure, but how exactly is the Main Body portion of the APA paper supposed to be written? I’ve never written anything more than an essay before. This has to be 5 pages not including the title, summary and references.

I also have to be base it on at least 5 “peer reviewed” journals from my Universities online journal library. What is a “peer reviewed” journal and how do I know if it is?

It is an online class at my University and my professor has been unable to contact for a while now (I think he had an emergency, and I and the rest of the class are getting worried) so I cannot ask him.

If anybody could help me out I’d be very grateful.

You can most likely just write the body as you would normally write an essay.
Concerning the journals, there should be an option to search only peer reviewed journals in the library. You may have to look under “advanced search.” Good luck :)

“Peer reviewed” means that it has been vetted by others in the author’s field—other scholars who are the author’s professional peers. Professional journals put articles through a review process to make sure they are sound before they publish them. This checking process is part of what gives the journals their authority and professional standing—their credibility—in the field.

Search through your university’s database for other APA articles and note how those are structured. You’ll see the same curve evident in essays written for English – an introduction, the body, and a summary. It isn’t too much different in structure. However, make sure to keep your personal opinions out of the paper unless your professor specifically asks for it – psych papers are typically written from an objective viewpoint.

Also, is there a TA? Your professor shouldn’t just disappear… it isn’t exactly fair on the students, especially when you’ve got assignments due that need clarification. Can you contact the department and tell them your professor is MIA? I would think that if he’s been missing most of the week then the entire class deserves a pushed back deadline.

The body should be in a monospace font, and should be double spaced. All the journals you will encounter in the on line library will likely have been peer reviewed.

Here is the go to site for paper styles. All of the librarians I work with are familiar with the Online Writing Lab at Purdue and they agree that is the best out there.

Good advice so far. To find peer-reviewed journals, search for your essay topic using Google Scholar or PubMed.
