Do you wear tie-dye? Do you still wear tie-dye?

Asked by Jeruba (55829points) January 26th, 2010

Is tie-dye a fashion statement for you or a ridiculous bit of juvenilia?

Are you a relic of the psychedelic sixties or a hip youngster?

Do you just like bright colors, lots of them, everywhere—on your bedsheets, your window dressings, your socks?

Would you not be caught dead in anything that a Deadhead might wear?

I used to, but my wife threw away (or possibly burnt) most of it.

Isn’t it do you wear tie-dye again? I saw it being raved about on some tv show. I don’t happen to have any left!

I have an Oregon Ducks T shirt that is tie died. I get strange looks in California, but in Oregon, no wardrobe is complete without a little tie dye!
My house is modern with a lot of bright colors. Reds, oranges, yellows and browns…..

What’s wrong with being a Deadhead?

mcbealer's avatar

yes, I still wear mine :) I am a thirty-something

There’s the one an old boyfriend made for me and I almost died wearing when I wrecked my bike.

There’s the one I got when I visited The Farm in TN.

There’s the one I bought from a head shop in Providence RI in 1990 that has silk-screened art by a famous Grateful Dead era artist… a fiery sun on the front and a cosmic looking moon on the back. It’s long-sleeved, and my son has dibs on it if I ever decide to get rid of it.

Then there’s the one I bought from a vendor at one of my favorite area art festivals in PA several years ago.

So I guess to answer your question, they are all steeped in nostalgia…

I consider myself über-aware of color… I’m often inspired by colors, and like to use certain colors to accent rooms.

I have several tie-dye shirts. I buy one almost every year at my county fair. They are good quality cotton, last a long time, and the colors are very bright. Being a sloppy eater, I like them because they hide the stains well. I am 43 years old and have been wearing them since I was a teen.

Never have and I certainly don’t see me adding it to my wardrobe anytime soon.

I have a tie-dye t-shirt and a tie-dye dress. I wear them both regularly. The t-shirt is actually quite new. I had an old t-shirt that quite literally fell apart because I wore it so much. I replaced it while I was on Ocracoke last summer. I’ve always just liked tie-dye. Not sure why. I wasn’t alive in the 60s. Every time I wear them, I get lots of compliments, though.

When there was a ‘60s revival during my senior year of HS (20th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band!), I had a couple of self-tie-dyed T-shirts I’d wear. I don’t wear such things now, though I could if I wanted to. I wore a lot of paisley, too.

@lucillelucillelucille I agree. I’ve NEVER worn it & never will.

I love tie-dye. I just never wear it next to my face.

Skirts, belts, wraps, etc. all good. Shirts, not so much. Headbands are acceptable, sometimes.

Facade's avatar

No. Never. Not even if it is coming back as a trend. I refuse lol

I wear some tie-dye, mostly on shirts and scarves. It’s not the homemade sort, though. I only choose the relatively subtle stuff. I just think it’s pretty. And I have a bit of a Bohemian-wannabe thing going on.

I do my own tie-dye shirts. It fun to do. And seeing that I volunteer at the shelter, I like to do fun activities with the kids. So yes I wear it to.

We tie dyed some onsies for my friends baby. She looks really cute in them. We just did one color and they turned out really well. We tried to tie dye some t shirts for ourselves but they never made it into wardrobe rotation.

i love it. last summer i did maybe 5 batches of tie dye shirts, 5 or 6 shirts each time. so i have a ton, and i love them. its fun. i probably wear tie dye twice a week. I personally think i look good in it. and i love colorful clothing. my favorite tie dye shirt ive made is purple and light blue, and it is the shit.

I think tie-dye is cool. I would wear it if I had anything tie-dyed!

I came of age in the sixties. I wore shifts and strings of beads. I went barefoot for an entire semester of college and wore sunglasses at night. I had long hair and pierced ears and I played the guitar. I knew all the words to all of Bob Dylan’s songs, the way he sang them. And yet I did not own and would not have worn one single article of tie-dyed material: too commercial, too trendy.

Now I think of it as nostalgically fun. I have some of these and enjoy wearing them. I had no idea tie-dye was making a comeback!

I have a tie dye shirt from Pizza My Heart in Santa Cruz.

I wear it, but I am an unabashed throwback from the 60’s, yes, a real live hippie. I have a friend who makes a very good living selling his tie-dye products in the bay area.

I adore my tie-dye shirts.

God, I am so boring. Just ask my kids. I wear classic colors, the brightest probably being a vibrant emerald green. And they are all plain polos or tees. :(

asmonet's avatar

@mcbealer: Ha. The Farm would have tie-dye. :P

mcbealer's avatar

@asmonet ~ have you been there?!? I loved it there…

TieDyeBySara's avatar

I wear it. I make and sell it, so in the summer months my hands wear it too. Wouldn’t have it any other way. My kids wear it, my husband wears it, my dad wears it.

wilma's avatar

Welcome @TieDyeBySara , I sometimes wear it too, my granddaughter and I have matching tie-dye aprons.
