What is IPOD's other capacity?

Asked by joon1986 (185points) January 26th, 2010

My cousin just formated his laptop so when he connected his ipod with newly installed itunes on his laptop, his music library was empty
well…he synced his ipod by mistake and now everything in his ipod is gone…..now here is the real problem!!!!
it’s annoying but not a problem to create new music play list and sync on his ipod but when he sync back his ipod he had his ipod filled up with “other ” (7.2GB out of 16GB)..WTF….erased browser’s history, cookies, and so on(no contract, no email account ) but still no luck
does anyone know how to erase this ‘other’ capacity on ipod??
THANKS!!!

I believe the “Other” stuff is album art and notes. If he has one of those Ipods were you can get games and other media files(pictures/video) then that’s probably what it is.

You can delete it by restoring the ipod to factory settings.

And, no matter what, there will be a certain amount of “other” on your iPod. Most of it, after the factory reset, will be the iPod OS. The leftover space taken by “other” should be negligible.

thanks guys,,,,I am also aware of existence of “other” since I have Iphone and had ipod touch myself….but 7.2GB out of 16GB is non-sense…i guess best bet is to restore it to factory mode…..(he will spend whole night doing jailbreak to reinstalling all the apps he had :) )

Are you sure it’s 7.2GB and not 7.2MB? I don’t think it’s possible to have that much “other” unless the “other” is a bunch of movies or something in which case it would show up as “video”...

If @HankMoody‘s suggestion is the case, 7.2MB is considered a negligible amount by me.

Yes, I am 100% sure this is 7.2GB…..otherwise no reason to post :)

@joon1986 I hear you about the 7.2GB but that doesn’t make sense becuase the “other” is the operating system and files needed to run the iPod and there’s no way that is even a gig. I’d format the thing and start over, but that’s just me.

I totally agree with you..and that’s usually the case
anyway I resolve the problem..
I used winscp to look around the folders and found out that there was two itunes library created inside the folder (one is from library synced with old laptop and another is from new)
I erased the old one and now it’s back to normal!!!
thanks anyway for helping me out guys!!
