What does one do on his days off?

Asked by Nullo (22009points) January 27th, 2010

For the first time in my life, I find myself in a job that has no qualms about moving my off-days around. It’s Wednesday, and I find myself on such a day off, and I can’t seem to think of anything to do. Normally I’d spend my days off with the folks, but that’s kind of hard to do when they’re both at work.
Suggestions?

Go on a hike, and then read a book.

Oh, savor it! Beach, hike, or visit something that is only open during the hours you normally have to work (museum, library)... you could play tourist for the day.

You can get errands done during the week freeing up your weekend days.

You can go out into the suncshine when parks, forests and trails aren’t crowded.

All my days are “days off”. I chop firewood, clean the cabin, listen to music, Fluther, tinker with the electrical system (I’m off-grid), shoot holes in some targets, groom the cats, clip on the cross-country skis and check out the countryside, check out the world situation on the shortwave, brood over my thesis and consume too many cigarettes and too much Glenfiddich.

That sounds awesome. You ought to write a book.

Hmm. Maybe I’ll go practice snow driving.

@Nullo It took 29 years in the Army to earn all these “days off”. Now, no one to spend them with :^(

Aren’t there off-the-grid communities that you could join? Granted, you’d probably have to move.

@Nullo I’m planning on moving back to the farm in NH to be nearer to my thesis advisor, I’ll also be closer to Megs friends; not that I’m looking for social contacts right now though.

Read books, watch movies, go hiking, running and walking, zoos, museums, amusement parks, sleeping and naps, road trips, picnics, camping, errands and chores, flying kites, swimming, charitable work, surfing the web (think: Fluther), library, sports, dance, listen to music, go on a date, hobbies & crafts.
