I am having problems with my sciatic nerve. Do you think it's OK to attend spinning tonight?

Asked by Raggedy_Ann (455points) January 28th, 2010

Or am I going to hurt myself even more? I haven’t gone to the doctor as I’m not even sure that’s what the problem is. However, I had a similar situation about 10 years ago while I was pregnant and it did eventually go away.

Consult your doctor first.

I would attend spinning. Do everything you can do. I am disabled now and immensely regret some things I didn’t do because I was waiting for gawd knows what.

@faye I was thinking that perhaps it would help more than create more problems However, @Doctor_D I’ve also been thinking that I should contact my doctor.

There is not a lot of treatment for sciatic nerve but if you have a pinched nerve that would be different. What are your symptoms?

Maybe you should go to a restorative yoga class instead.

@faye Just a pain in my left hip that radiates into my leg on occassion. I was standing at my kitchen counter Saturday making supper when I went to walk away. I took a couple of steps and was in severe pain. It seems to really bother me when I sit or lay for long periods of time. I spoke w/friend last night who is a personal trainer at my gym and she thought perhaps it was a pinched nerve. I tried using my heating pad on it which really didn’t seem to help.

There are exercises that you can do to help sciatica.

It should be Ok to go to your spinning class.

Yes, keep moving until a doctor says you shouldn’t.

It’s far best to listen to your bodys needs and it is saying to soak in hot (sea salt mineral if your blood pressure isn’t a problem) and go to sleep and then rest some more. And then get some more comfortable rest. Drink good water to flush out, eat mineral/vitamin rich foods, green juices if you can.

Five years ago “Someone” I know hurt their sciatic nerve and back in sports and took aspirin, then took pain pills to ignore the pain and ran around and did errands and took more pain pills and did more stupid things. He has not recovered from sciatica and for that second year had to use a can to walk. He not been able to do any sports, lift anything, etc. There’s only the regret that you gain in retrospect. But it’s too late.
He had MRI, cat scan, a hundreds+ lazer therapy sessions, chiropractic sessions, shaitzsui (spell?), and medical doctors.
His quality of life has been stripped….all because he drugged the pain and redamaged his injury.
I think you’re correct when you ask if you could do further damage. That’s listening to your body.
Don’t fool around with Sciatic, he’s a mean dude!
I have no idea what spinning is.

@OneMoreMinute thanks for the advice. “Spinning” is also known as group cycling.

correction….That’s a soak in a tub of hot water Sea Salt Mineral bath.

I am not a doctor, but I recommend skipping the spinning until your Sciatic nerve is well.

I would, but go slow. Be careful not to strain other muscles at the expense of a taxed muscle. I had sciatica years ago and my doctor recommended I take a small course of anti-inflammatories. He said the nerve runs though a tight hole in the joint and when it’s inflamed it rubs against the small space and makes it worse. An anti-inflammatory overrides this and gives your nerve a chance to recover. It made sense and it’s worked for me. And, no, I am not a doctor, so…ask your doctor.

I thought you meant spinning as in wool? How much damage would sitting in a class was my notion of your post. It wouldn’t hurt any more than sitting at home. But if you meant riding a bike then no, not while it hurts. Your body is talking to you.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and advice. I went to the gym last night and visited with a few different people about my problem and they all suggested that I rest those muscles/nerves. I have an appointment tonight with the physical therapist at the gym for further discussion.

I hurt my back training in my gym last week and although did have pain i chose to ignore it and went on and done a spin class. BIG mistake i wish i could turn back the clock. Following this i am now crippled with pain from sciatica and having to take very strong pain killers just to get me through the day. I cant even walk at the moment. So my advise is rest first, then gradually introduce gentle exercise. Spinning is so heavy going you will just aggavate the sciatic nerve further which will cause you so many problems.
