@Snarp Wow comparing the manpower is a pretty big difference!

U.S.
Manpower fit for military service:

males age 16–49: 59,764,677
females age 16–49: 59,437,663 (2009 est.)

Russia
Manpower fit for military service:

males age 16–49: 21,098,306
females age 16–49: 27,968,883 (2009 est.)

I assume when they say fit, they mean ready for combat, or able to.

⅓ of Americans are enlisted in the Army? Seriously?

Snarp's avatar

@Steve_A Yeah, but you have to look at their military expenditures and then their GDPs to see the real difference. The U.S. spends almost $600 billion annually on the military. Russia spends about $40 billion. So the U.S. spends 15 times as much on the military as Russia does.

@VanCityKid That’s manpower fit for service, not manpower in service. That number is basically how big the military could be if we drafted everybody we could.

In the US, all young men must register for the Selective Service at 17. If we were fair, young women would have to as well.

The Russian military is technologically inferior to the United States military. but don’t tell that to the Modern Warfare 2 kids who think a full scale Russian invasion of the US is feasible

galileogirl's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Didn’t you ever see the movie Red Dawn? The Soviet and Cuban armies invaded Colorado. If it weren’t for Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen we would all be eating piroshki, amigo.

Has a communist army ever been beaten?

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

I haven’t known the statistics for over 20 years. Apparently they were greatly over-rated even then. Russia is undertaking a modest modernization program that will replace rusting hardware with a smaller but more modern force, especially in armor and aircraft. China seems to be heading in that direction also. @Simone_De_Beauvoir please don’t send the Russian Mafia after me, I’d hate to have to explain the bodies to the local constables and (CIA redacted)
