How can I open AIM on my MacBook?

Asked by Frankie (4032points) January 31st, 2010

I just bought a MacBook yesterday and, as I’ve been a PC user my entire life, I’m having some trouble figuring things out. The current issue is that I just downloaded the AIM 2.0 for Mac and everything was successful…except I have no idea how or where to go to actually find and open it. I’ve been searching around for about half an hour and all I can find is the install icon. On PCs I would download something and when it was finished installing it would automatically give me the option to open what I just downloaded…does Mac not have this or am I just missing something completely? I’m not all that technologically literate (especially not for Macs) so I’m getting pretty frustrated and am starting to think that getting a Mac was not the best idea I’ve ever had. I need help :(

Just use iChat. Should already be in your applications folder. An even better alternative if you want to connect to multiple services is Adium.

Please hold your breathe. I’m about to make a bunch of videos on how OS X works. Installing applications is one of them. Along with maintenance, file-structure, terminal, and so on.

My hosting is just borked until tomorrow. Let me know if there is something you want to learn about and I can make a screencast explaining it.

And to answer your Q. Use iChat. it is already in your applications folder.

iChat and Adium are both good options.

If you want to learn more about iChat, you can watch the video on this page, directly from Apple, or hang out for @johnpowell.

When you install applications you will find them on your hard drive, in a folder called Applications. Either double-click on your Macintosh HD icon on your desktop (if it’s showing) or click on the blue happy Mac face in your dock (at the bottom of your screen.) That will open a Finder window. From there you’ll see a shortcut to your Applications folder in the left sidebar.

I would also recommend using iChat, which is preinstalled on your Mac, or download and install Adium if you use multiple services like AIM, Gmail and MSN.

Thanks for your help everyone, I’ve been using iChat and am getting used to it…it will just take time!
