I want to try beekeeping. How should I get started?

Asked by gememers (445points) January 31st, 2010

I live on 5 acres with trees, a lot of plants, and a river. My mother is VERY allergic to bees. What are the first steps I should take with preparation and equipment etc.?

Where do you live? I know that in the Bay Area, in Berkeley, there is a place that offers classes on urban beekeeping. You might want to try googling beekeeping classes and the city you live in and see if there are similar local classes or a group of local beekeepers who could help you out. Is your mother planning to visit you often? If she has a severe bee allergy, you may want to reconsider, or place the beehives on the far reaches of your property so that they aren’t near the house.

@occ has good advice but to be more specific, try looking up local beekeeping associations or clubs. Those typically offer classes but if not they can at least point you to local resources.
