What do you do to overcome food cravings?

Asked by coolguitarplayer (72points) February 1st, 2010

You know what it’s like. You promise yourself not to eat a certain food you know you shouldn’t be eating. And then a craving creeps up on you and even though it seems as inescapable as a black hole, you somehow manage to “be good.” What did you do to overcome the craving?

Big old fail. I usually cave.

Chocolate doesn’t last long in these here parts.

I read in a magazine that if you just catch enough of a whiff of the food, the craving will go away.

Or do what I do: buy some Carnation flavored breakfast drink!!! Tastes like a milkshake but it’s good for you :)

If it’s something sweet, try a piece of hard candy as a replacement. If it’s soda, try flavored sparkling water. If it’s cake, I can’t help you.

I think everything is fairly okay in moderation. If you really want something, have a little bite and you’ll be satisfied.
If you really don’t want to go there, I’ve heard that a craving passes after something like 5–10 minutes(maybe less, or more, I’m not sure) ride out the storm and the craving will be gone. Hopefully. Otherwise, hard candy is great

@kevbo I refuse to believe that a crappy piece of hard candy will help me get over a chocolate snurf. Were you not here last wek when I went into withdrawal?
Speaking of cake, haev you eaten the lava cake from Dominos? One bite and you will be hooked. Don’t do it. Save yourself!
@coolguitarplayer sorry. I have no good advice for you. I eat it. And if I have trouble getting something together, I ask the collective to help me. That’s right, I asked the collective just last week how to make some crummy bakers chocolate into something edible.
Sorry. Eat the apple…..sssssssss!~

I eat. But that probably doesn’t help because you most likely don’t have my metabolism and work out like I do. But you still have to listen to your body, you have to snack when you are hungry at least(on something healthy, of course).

Fruits and nuts usually help for me

You must be feeding your body all it needs and then the cravings will be reduced.
This is not the same as eating whatever you want!

If you need to, join Weight Watchers or any groups that teaches you who to eat for the rest of your life.

There are smart ways to deal with cravings by allowing for small amounts of sweets or chocolate.

Good luck but get help so you don’t feel deprived all the time.

Grab a bottle of water to fill me up.

Lava Cake is so good. Plus cake tastes about 5 times better when it’s delivered to you.

@jmah Word. I can remember a boyfriend years ago putting a bag of York Peppermint patties in the cupboard. Now, I can’t sleep if I know there’s chocolate in the house. Or so it seemed back then. Age has given me a few graces. I digress. Three or four days later he looked for them. Of course they were gone. He was so confused and puzzled it was comical. He truly didn’t understand. He said “Why did you eat them?” Why did I eat them. mwaahhhhhaaaaa. Because I like them. Because I get the sensation of driving my Huskies across the frozen Tundra!!! (old YPP commercial)
He brought home Cadbury bars. With caramel in them. I ate mine. He took a couple bites and wrapped it up. How does he do that? I sat down on the arm of the couch next to him and said “So, ....whatcha gonna do with your chocolate?” He started to give an offhand remark, then he stopped and looked at me. For like a full minute. Then he got up and very pointedly, I thought, stuck it into his lunchbox and closed it with a sharp “snap!” Mwwahhhhhaaahhhh. I had a stash of M&M’s, take your stupid Cadbury.

Figure out what is it your craving. If your craving something salty, like Mike said nuts or pretzels can help with that or if its something sweet than fruits. If it doesn’t seem to be either than make yourself a small snack. Sometimes its just a matter that you are not eating a balanced diet and your body is lacking some nutrient. Like if you are low on carbs than your sugar intake may be lower and your body is craving sugar. If you are low on salt you may be slightly dehydrated and need some water and salt or some electrolites. If you find yourself licking your lips than your probably dehydrated.
For me, I find salmon and a large salad helps to keep the cravings under control.

Drink flavored water, I use a few drops of lemon or apple juice. Consider eating a tiny amount of the food you want, along with a lot of celery, carrot, or lettuce.

Depression will do it, but I wouldn’t reccomend it. I used to fill up on rice, stir-fried veggies and gatorade.
