It works for me in a playlist. It does not work in your Library.

1. In iTunes, go to View > View Options…
2. Check a box that you will want to sort by.
3. Click OK
4. In the list of songs, click on the category you want to sort by.

Do you need to have them arranged in an order not listed in that menu? You can arrange songs via click-and-drag if you have them in a playlist. To create one:

1. Go to File > New Playlist
2. Give it a name.
3. Drag-and-drop from the main library or from other areas.

In Playlist View, the left-most column has a triangle at the top; click on the triangle so that it’s pointing up. When you click on the triangle the playlist sorts according to drag and drop order. You can then rearrange any song in that list by click-dragging the desired song up or down the list and releasing where you want the song to be.

Clicking on any other column at the top re-sorts that playlist by that criteria; for example sorting by artist name alphabetically can be done by clicking on the word “Artist” at the top. Clicking on the word Artist a second time sorts in reverse alphabetical (z to a) order.
