The AT4 CS. Great for close quarters.

Pokemon….. duh.

I hate to say it but Pokémon Gold and Silver were the best RPGs from childhood, although they push the RPG genre a bit beyond the typical fantasy RPG what with the swords and spells and so forth (and they’re incredibly simple in their structure and paper-beats-rock mechanic.)

In terms of gameplay, story and longevity these games have survived right up until the present day (I still play from time to time, restarting every now and then to keep it interesting). And of course the subsequent games all had their moments…

Can’t wait for the re-mastered (?) versions… I hope they haven’t hacked them up too much…

FUCK YEA ^

@bluemukaki when are they coming out with the remasterd of gold and silver. i loved fire read and leaf green.

gold and silver where the shit. 16 fucking badges!!

Ame_Evil's avatar

mmm Final Fantasy 9.

However there are two MMORPGs that need a mentioning: Dark Age of Camelot and Guildwars. Which one I prefer, I have no idea as they both have their pros/cons.

And oh yeah, Pokemon Yellow/Silver were the versions I played and they were awesome, Yellow especially so at the time. Atm I have downloaded an emulator and am playing Platinum a bit when I can just for the “nostalgia”. Not really true nostalgia, but I wanted to get the same feeling I did when first playing Yellow/Silver that you can’t get by just replaying them.

bigboss's avatar

@Ame_Evil my favorite characters were steiner and vivi. vivi cool as hell.

bluemukaki's avatar

@Ltryptophan Dragon Warrior for the NES is a big chunk of what taught me how to read. Lots of fond memories of sitting with my mom reading the quest text out loud.

I think my favorite of all time had to be Ultima 8. So much to do, so many quests and side quests to go on, and I will still argue that this had one of the most in-depth magical systems I’ve ever seen. Mowens and I competed as kids over who had the coolest character/house/weapons.

bigboss's avatar

@bluemukaki omg that sounds awesome! its making me want to buy another ds (mine broke)

damn march is going to be nice. final fantasy 13 is coming out in march as well.

Ame_Evil's avatar

@bigboss Yeah Vivi was. I quite liked Beatrix, shame she wasn’t recruitable for your main party.

bigboss's avatar

@Ame_Evil i dont recall who beatrix is, but i just remembered freya. ive always loved the dragoon/lancer class in final fantasy games. “Jump” is such an awesome attack.

Final fantasy 3 (aka 6) was the best rpg ever.
and no this isn’t an opinion!

Fallout (1,2, & 3)
Dungeon Master
Dunzhin

Uhm…

AD&D.
War of the Ring (the tabletop game from the 70s)
Boot Hill

Because they’re real “Role-Playing Games” that involve imagination and intuition, not just following a maze set by a nearsighted Japanese computer geek. (Not that I don’t love a good video game from time to time… but I’d never call one a “favourite RPG”.)

FF11, starocean: until the end of time, and FF10.

I love “The World Ends With You” for Nintendo DS. It has a great story, and the game play is pretty entertaining. The plot is very unique, and there is a lot to do outside of the main story.

Chrono Trigger on the SNES.

ninjacolin's avatar

secret of mana and chrono trigger were both really great

erichw1504's avatar

Even though I’ve never really gotten into RPGs, I thoroughly enjoyed Chrono Trigger.

FrankHebusSmith's avatar

Having played them since childhood, the best are (in no special order)

-Chrono Trigger
-Final Fantasy 6 (originally FF3 in the US)
-Final Fantasy 7
-Secret of Mana
-Final Fantasy Tactics

-And the original Final Fantasy gets a nod for literally being the first “Quest Game” as you would recognize them today.

Modern quest RPG’s just have nothing on their predecessors. In fact, there hasn’t been a really good one since Final Fantasy 7 imo.

Oh I also really did enjoy Pokémon Gold.

@Seek_Kolinahr In that case, put me down for Paranoia!

GURPS!

I have played many and read the rules for many more (a lot of which many people, even hardcore RPG players never even heard of) but GURPS has the best rules set.

Shadowrun is a strong second; the rules are wonky and I wind up using a few house rules that hybridize 4E with the older editions, but the storyline is very detailed, well-planned, and just plain old kicks ass… assuming you are into cyberpunk at all or care about how adventurers and the “real world” interact.

@mrentropy I don’t suppose you’d be up for GURPS Discworld? Terry Pratchett worked with SJG on that one.

Staalesen's avatar

D&D
Gurps..

if we are talking videogames, then :

Betrayal at Krondor
Fallout 1–3
Baldurs Gate Saga

HungryGuy's avatar

Hmmmm, that’s a tough one. I can’t pick just one. So, in no particular order…

Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Mass Effect
FF7
Earthbound

ParaParaYukiko's avatar

Skies of Arcadia is a highly underrated RPG that originally came out for the Sega Dreamcast and was later re-released for Game Cube. Awesome music, amazing story line, beautiful environments… Really, play this game.

Other than that, Oblivion is pretty cool. And of course the FF games are classic. I loved 10 and the remake of 4.

…I also have been playing the various Pokemon games since Red and Blue, so that’s definitely up there on my release. So psyched for the re-makes of Gold and Silver!

downtide's avatar

An RPG to me is the sort played with friends around a table, with paper and dice and a stack of rulebooks.

I’m showing my age again.

jerv's avatar

@downtide Most people who play RPGs nowadays never saw an 8-track player or a corded phone :P

HungryGuy's avatar

@jerv – My midi player has 128 tracks. Someday, that will seem limiting, I suppose. And why would anyone want to put a cord on a phone? What purpose would that possibly serve to not be able to take your phone with you wherever you go?

mrentropy's avatar

@HungryGuy You could, technically, take your phone anywhere. It just wouldn’t work. There was a time, though, when phones were hardwired to the wall.

HungryGuy's avatar

@mrentropy – Really? How odd! Why would anyone want their phone hardwired to the wall? I don’t see any advantage to that…

Seek's avatar

@jerv @downtide

I’m reading this sci-fi book called “Dragon’s Egg”, that was written in 1980, and set in 2050

The computers used in space, by the astronauts, have kilometers-long hoses of wire attached to them, and connected to the ship.

As far as Robert Forward knew, we don’t have Bluetooth in 2050. ^_^

HungryGuy's avatar

Wel, obviously, radio wasn’t invented back in 1980. So how could Robert Forward possibly have predicted wireless networking? :-/

mrentropy's avatar

@HungryGuy Well, you wouldn’t. That’s why they eventually became modular. The advantage, back then, was you had it wired to your house or you didn’t have a phone.

jerv's avatar

@HungryGuy I guess in Mr. Forward’s world, Nikola Tesla was never born. I mean, the radio was was actually invented around 1890!

Seek's avatar

@mrentropy

Exactly. The advantage was that you weren’t expected to be trackable every moment of every day. Sometimes the person you wanted just wasn’t home.

HungryGuy's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr – When I don’t want to be bothered, I just set my phone to vibrate. And I usually set it to silent at night.

Seek's avatar

But, then there was no expectation that you would be available, thus saving the ”Why don’t you answer your pho-one” argument.

HungryGuy's avatar

Ah yes, Good point! But most of my friends know I turn my phone off at night, and that I’m pretty stubborn about my beauty sleep :-p

jerv's avatar

Shadowrun has an interesting take on the “always connected” thing. Your Commlink is your wallet, credit card, medical record, cell-phone, computer, music player, etcetera, and everything has RFID tags in it, even that fast food burger you just ate!

Oh, and shutting it off is a criminal offense ;)
