What is the deal with SNL Digital Shorts?

Asked by simone54 (7629points) February 3rd, 2010

They usually very different then the rest of the sketches. One things I can tell is that they are obviously filmed before hand. Do they have different writers then the rest of the show? I guess what I am wondering is why are the digital shorts always funny and the rest of the show sucks.

SNL has always had pre-recorded skits to some degree. (Perhaps you remember the infamous John Belushi “I’m a dancer” skit). But the digital skits started out when Andy Samberg and the rest of his comedy troupe, The Lonely Island (of “I’m on a Boat” and “Jizz in my Pants” fame) began filming sketches which were cut from episodes, but the troupe thought were funny enough to film. When the skits began to actually air, people really liked them, so it started becoming a regular feature on the show.

It’s usually the younger members, like Andy Samberg and some of the writers, that write and perform the digital shorts. I’m a huge fan of the Lonely Island, so I always look forward to the shorts. They’re my favorite part of the show. “Laser Cats” and “The Jammy Shuffle” are my favorite ones :)

I think Adam McKay has directed a lot of the recent ones…so I assume they’re his ideas that don’t really fit in the show…not inculding Andy Samburg’s band’s stuff…I love them all, even the idiotic ones.

Does anyone else think Laser Cats is ignorant? I hate that one, but the rest are usually really great.
