I wonder if the government has it in for Toyota?

Asked by p8prclip (138points) February 3rd, 2010

I realize that there have been some recall problems…but it seems like every time I listen to the radio there is another accusation leveled at them?

It seems that the Toyota Motor Corporation has been dragging their feet about addressing some problems they have already known about. The media, therefore, is having a field day. I do not think it is the government.

I agree @DrC it’s not the government, in fact I think they haven’t pushed hard enough to get answers. There have been so many incidents, I am wondering just the opposite. Why didn’t the government and the media get on this sooner?

If you do some homework you might find that toyota has neglected many problems, they tend to be deceptive and don’t want openly admit there vehicles have problems like others.

Did you see the toyota president in japan wearing a mask hiding his identity?

toyota tends to purchase the patents of old technology and tweak it to make money so they don’t have to make there own stuff.

here’s a good one! in the 1980’s and 1990’s toyota bought the patents for the german EFI system and used it on all it’s vehicles, Today the defective trottle switch is the same switch in 1980’s volkwagons only it’s not on the throttle body, they got rid of the cable and put it right under the dash!

they still have not made there own… And this is why I won’t purchase one – I tend to want new technology like from a chevy or a ford!

@phil196662
new technology
like leaf springs?

philosopher's avatar

I agree with all of you.

phil196662's avatar

@ragingloli ; fuel management, decent handling and yes leaf springs on the vans so you can actualy carry cargo and perhaps building something worth keeping longer than three years

decent handling and american cars? yeah right.
something worth keeping longer than three years buy german then

leaf springs on the vans so you can actualy carry cargo
So you are saying that all other vans with proper coil springs can not be used to carry cargo?

And even if so, what business have leaf springs on GM’s flagship vehicle, the Corvette?

this all confuses me. Toyota has the best resale value…how can this be if all their technology is “borrowed”?

Lets call it Refurbished !

Ok- truth… The Fuel Injection System in a toyota is the same a the Volkswagen bug and squareback built in 1968 to 1973. I had one and remember in 1993 when toyota purchased the patent.

today’s totota gas pedal has the exact same number of wires as the switch on my squareback and also works the same serving as a fuel enrichment and cutoff device. when toyota put it on the pedal the acceleration problem happens when one of the enrichment contacts (there are a dozen) shorts and gives _constant and not pulsed enrichment resulting in the _sudden acceleration problem! When it was on the -throttle body you took your foot off the pedal and then the engine would flood!

Toyota has killed 18 people so far…

Rag em all they want, I’m still getting myself a Supra :) .

No if I had to guess, there’s a combination of just people going too far with what they say, a problem that’s kinda big, and MAYBE a bit of wish by the government to give the American auto makers a bit of a notch up on the leading foreign company.

@p8prclip Virtually ALL car technology is borrowed from one company or another. Everytime one of them comes up with something new or innovative, be it leaf springs or a rear view camera, the others will quickly adopt it, or purchase the rights to use it.

Also most every auto maker on the planet has made a “trade” or a joint venture with one of their major counterparts at some point, exchanging technology and blueprints for their designs.

For example, Mazda and Chrysler did a trade at some point in the 90’s, and this gave you the Sebring Convertible made by Chrysler. The original convertible Sebrings had the front end of an Eclipse, and the rear end of the regular Sebring. (with some modifications to the body and other small stuff of course).

It will take more than a stuck gas pedal to ruin the good name of Toyota and their vehicles. if the problems exists and there has been damages, then where are the photos of the accidents? this appears to be a ploy to knock Toyota from the no. 1 selling car in America down to a lower level and to make American built cars have a comeback. this will never happen. Toyota owners are loyal. this temporary setback will not ruin Toyota. look at all the junk car General Motors made in the 70s and 80s.

My whole reason for posting this question was because I feel like Toyota is getting a bad rap. I was all about buying a Chevy before Obama before fired the CEO and took over. I actually never took a look at Toyota before this happened.

Or, maybe they are trying to save lives. I always find it so terrific when the government actually comes out and tells us there is a real problem that is killing people. Get those cars off the road! Fix them!
